My Google fu says we have ~98k ICU beds in the entire country. These are the beds that will be most in demand of have millions stricken in a short period of time. Based on the evidence from China the death rate in that scenario is 5% or higher as you pointed out.Even if we assume the most optimistic numbers of 0.5% that is still 1.75M people. Then when you realize every hospital in the country would be over ran, the death rate would likely climb over 5%.
Not to mention the death rate of everything else people go to the hospital for.
Basically Americans refuse to make any real sacrifice if they can convince themselves it won't directly affect themselves.

Well, I'm still not sure about long term damage to global economy from this, but markets sure are tanking like it's 2008. I don't think stimulus is necessary yet, but damn, we should be doing much better job at handling the virus, last I heard we only tested 2000 people, this number may be higher now, but it's still completely inadequate.
