Nate Silver said something that I think is very right - that Trump saying the coronavirus isn't a problem and we've got it all under control is politically foolish. If it turns out we do have it under control that's fine but if it turns out we don't people are going to hang that around his neck as a symbol of his incompetence.
Trump also said it would be gone by April. We need to highlight over and over again Trump cut the program for pandemic spending back in the fall of 2019. The same program Obama put in place after Ebola.

More orange incompetence.

Yup, called it, now we only need some additional bad containment news, add a little salt and we will have onset panic. Wonder if the HFT bots have gotten a little more slack or are they the same whiney little bitches as last time.

edit : also the dip must not be too steep, cause what tools are left to mitigate? Trump burned them all.
There's always negative interest rates.

Turnip is toast. The economy is absolutely not going to be able to ride out even the imminent disruptions from China, Japan, SK, etc, as well as global demand hit fairly substantially in a variety of ways. Airlines, hotel, oil, hospitality, retail, automakers, it's going to be a problem.

After all the malicious/incompetent things he's done, you think something that is really not in his control will stick? Sorry, but he really is Teflon Don.

Trump has bet his entire Presidency on the economy. If that turns down, he's toast. I don't believe that's going to happen though, and I do believe this is just a necessary correction, but we'll see. The economy is showing signs of weakness, especially foreign markets.

Yes, I think if there is a terrifying pandemic where significant numbers of people are dying and you have quotes and tweets of him saying 'not a problem!' it will stick.

As far as 'teflon don' goes I've never really understood it. He's the most enduringly unpopular president in US history precisely because all the bad shit he's done HAS stuck to him. He's teflon don when it comes to the Republican base that R elected officials aren't willing to alienate by removing him but that's it.

Edit: With a solid economy like this any president other than Trump would be coasting to re-election. It's precisely because so much bad shit has stuck to him that he's fighting for his political life.

That's what I mean. To the people that actually have the power to do something about it, he's untouchable. Doesn't matter if 60% of the population don't want him as president.

With an election coming up I think it matters.

You would think his mishandling of ALL natural disasters to date would eventually catch up with him.

PR is the obvious disaster, but we also had several other hurricanes (inc sharpiegate) that were handled poorly.
We also had the wildfires in CA and the "cleaning of forests."
The Houston floods were also not managed well, but mostly forgotten.

Really, Trump has been tremendously lucky to date as he's had no challenges to really confront.
No dot com crash, no 9/11, no inflation, no mainland disasters, no great recession, no Nat Sec threats not his own making.

Just got handed a hot economy and low employment and he's barely been able to keep from fucking that up.
Luck will run out eventually.

An ~8% decline in less than 2 days leads me to believe that there's more rattling the markets than just the coronavirus.

I think you're right. The FRB has gone to heroic lengths holding down interest rates & buying bonds from the banks to cover for problems in the repo market. Stock buybacks have run their course. I don't pretend to understand it all, but I suspect there's been a lot of that "irrational exuberance" Greenspan mentioned about the financial markets & the housing boom.

Yea, I keep forgetting he's gotten control of every dept so there is no flow of any bad news. That would be fake news to him.

Odd, Bob Iger just steped down as CEO of Disney as of this second. Stocks way down, I wonder if he knows something like they announce that they are closing down the parks?

Well, I've lost about 80% of my gains in the market from last year in the last 3 days. How's everyone else?

Usually you don't get the ol "effective immediately" treatment unless it's something bad or health related. Nobody seems to know right now.

From what I’ve read he’s staying through the end of next year?

Oh apparently Trump and the congressional republicans want to spend time finding pay fors on the emergency viral outbreak supplemental. Mostly by raiding other social support funds.

Can't we just say the virus will pay for the wall or something?

How did you manage that when the market is only down like 8% or so? Did you YOLO everything in weekly option or something?

I nibbled some today. If we open down big or go down big tomorrow, I'm going to buy in big for the upcoming bounce. Not really worried at all at this point. Actually I'm bullish AF.

It’s a matter of trust. The CDC says get ready for the storm. Larry Kudlow says “We got this contained, tightly.” Choose wisely.
