Are the full downloads better than 40k? The 30 second clips are only 40k. For 88 cents a song, I would want at least 128k if not 192k.

for charging at all it should be lossless. why should i buy from them when the stolen stuff is of higher quality

The sample download looks like 128k to me. But the previews look like 40k. So I imagine the full downloads are 128k wma which is pretty good. Here are a few things i saw in their FAQ:

WMA files protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM) encryption cannot be transferred from computer to computer. If you want to play music you downloaded from Walmart.com on another computer (or on any other device that plays audio CDs) you must burn your music onto an audio CD to play it (please note that you may burn a song to a CD up to 10 times).

How many times can I burn a song onto a custom CD?

You are licensed to burn a song to a CD 10 times. If you try to burn a CD after that, Windows Media® Player 9 will deliver a message indicating that you are not licensed to make any more burns to a CD.

What do I need to transfer songs to a portable player?

You need a WMA-compliant portable player that supports DRM. Not all MP3 players will play music that you download from Walmart.com. Please refer to the documentation that came with your player to determine if it is compatible.

A "lossless" CD song takes between 30MB and 50MB in space (tens times bigger than a normal MP3.) This is completely impractical to store and distribute. All MP3, WMA, etc, are going to have loss in quality.

Other than convinience, why would I want to pay the same price for a poorer quality copy than I can buy in the store?

I suppose it's good if you only purchase one song, but I like to buy a whole CD.

Don't forget that WalMart only sells "clean" versions of songs. (Which makes no sense as they sell unrated versions of movies and video games such as GTA3.)

Damn, if they would let you make a "normal" audio cd out of them, instead of a WMA MP3 Cd, I would consider downloading some of them. If I can't play the songs in my car player, what is the use? Not too many cars come with MP3 playing decks in them.

It's stuff like this that makes me hate people. How can they shop at this store when it wastes resources editting CDs and video games. Gimme a break. Use that money for another purpose.

If you want to play your music in your car, you can burn the songs onto a normal audio CD. You don't need a MP3 deck in your car.

why can't they hire one guy to actually do some research and create some QUALITY variable mp3's using possibly alt present standard or something and actually tell the consumer how the file was encoded. I would actually consider paying for that once I know the quality is acceptable.

Some of you people need to study up on compression schemes and their quality. 128kb WMA file is on par with 256kb MP3 file at half the size. If you wish to play these songs in your car just burn it on a regular CD.
