That BitTorrent software you have to install first sounds a little too scary for me...anyone here installed it before and have anything to report about it?

BitTorrent is great... I mainly use it to download animes, and it's much more convenient than leeching off IRC fserves.

BitTorrent's concept is pretty simple. While it's running, it'll first allocate the entire space of the file you're downloading, then connect to as many others as possible and download pieces, resulting in a relatively fast connection through parallel means. While it's running, which mostly means while you're downloading, other users will connect to you to download parts you have, even if you haven't completed the download. Also, downloads are approximately limited by your upload bandwidth, and because you're download from other people who are downloading too, BitTorrent connections typically go fastest a few hours after the release, and slow down as the file gets older.

Finally downloaded the 3 iso files w/ BitTorrent. Took about 28 hours, but it was worth the wait w/ my DSL service. The mirror sites are getting slammed. The best way to get it this week, if you can't wait nextweek.

You can read all about BitTorrent and the RedHat ISOs over on SlashDot.org (just put redhat in the search box at the bottom if you can't find a link). Find the story about RedHat 9.0 ISOs.

BitTorrent == open source eDonkey (sorta, some differences, but the file transfers appear to work the same sort of way in terms of transferring chunks of the file as described in a post above).

Wow, the went from 8.0 to 9.0 in 6-8 months? That was fast. I am doing fine with 7.2, remote administration does not need the new pretty graphical stuff.

Mirror Here

The server is "only" on a 10Mbit connection, so please use it only if you're not having success with BitTorrent. If your connection seems slow, check the current traffic on the server and see how close to the 10Mbit maximum it is.

There are tons of mirrors not listed on RedHats site. Look on newsgroups and message boards in your local area instead of huge communities like AT. I found one at my university I didn't know about

HrM.. bittorrent is great, especially for us anime chans We don't have the luxury of mirrors or many high speed servers.

animesuki com

Anyway, yea bittorrent is a good application. The 3.2 release is much better than the 3.1 and 3.1-cvs builds.

I can vouch for bit torrent. The anime fansub scene has it heavily in use for new releases now. Its limitation is that its not a file browser service like Edonkey and kazaa, a host sets up a specific file or set of files for download and the users take it or leave it. Its speciality is that it sends fragments to many of the different users connected, and those users send their fragments to other users. Reaching 40-200Kbytes per second downloading is normal after a file has gotten around and your getting sent fragments from 4-20 different users. The upload/download is supposed to be ratioed so people who upload faster get faster downloads, but I can achieve 100+kbytes download while only uploading 6-13Kbytes a second. /shrug

Wow this is amazing! How come I have never heard of this? I know there are Direct Connect links, but Torrenting is new to me! Amazing! Can you all tell me where you all heard about this first? Cool...

According to the Redhat site, only members of RHN that pay for support are supposed to be able to get the ISO's this week... general public consumption was supposed to be next week. Anyone finish d/l'ing and installing? Any significant differences over RH8??

I used bittorent and went smootly but pretty slow as my upload is only 256K.

Redhat 9.0 is working swell on my Dell 600C. Free OS for a cheap server.

Works for me

BTW samba setup was pretty easy but would not work using gui setup tools until I manually did sambapasswd or something. Have not used linux for ages so there might be a way to get it going using only the gui

Thanx for the info, but with my upstream of 256k max, it will take forever to download it.

Forever is relative:

Start download

Go to bed

Wake up: 3 RH 9.0 ISOs

Bittorent does not seem to suffer from disconects or any of the hassles you might have with unattended FTP. It's actualy downloading random chunks of the files from all over.

Not for the weak of heart though. Netstat shows some interesting hosts that I am getting and giving files from/to.

Nice thing is that bittornent does a CRC check or something so little chance of a hacked RH 9.0. with trojans or what not.

With the popularity of this download you'll probably have a hard time finding an FTP site that does 256K

If you do let us know! THe guy above linking to RH 9.0 had to pull it off his site as he was accounting for 10% of the outbound traffic for his entire school!

I like bit torrent. It seems realy fair: You get what you give....
