I used this a few days ago when the story first showed up on Slashdot. I got ~180KB down/40KB up once the download ramped up. Just set it up before I went to bed and woke up with the download complete. Very nice.

BTW, this is totally legit. It's Linux, of course you can download it for free!

Just so everyone knows:

BitTorrent relies on people leaving the window open after they download it, this way people who don't have the full file can get parts from you.

If you can spare the bandwidth, leave it open so you can help others download it

I hate BitTorrent. I get tons of IRQ_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL or whatever BSOD in XP with it! That's the only program that has every managed to BSOD me. I've had a couple ATI drivers do it, but never an application.

Man... I found BitTorrent to be effortless and idiot proof! I started at about 4 KB/s, but by the first 10% it was up to, and stayed around 140 KB/s.

I find that downloads work just fine for me (at up to 3.5Mbps, depending on server) without installing anyone else's software, be it bittorrent or Real's. Worse, I specifically do not dig file sharing programs, no matter what the rational or implementation. No body gets to setup a share on my hard drive but me.

Should be the right sizes for the ISO files.

disc1 - 653,312 kb (638 mb) - 668,991,488 bytes
disc2 - 661,632 kb (646 mb) - 677,511,168 bytes
disc3 - 496,672 kb (485 mb) - 508,592,128 bytes

I probably should have mentioned this in my original post.

For those with problems and slow uplinks, especialy DSL modem where maxing your uplink has a significant impact on your downlink, there is an alternative beta client you can find at http://ei.kefro.st/projects/btclient/ . It allowes you to set your maxiumum upload and how many users are allowed to download from you. These settings are actually in the original client but only via command line. This client intigrates it into the GUI.

pspada, im no big fan of file sharing programs either, they are usualy just full of leachers. BT is sweet in that it forces peeps to share, and security is good because the only file they can get from you is the one file your downloading (or downloaded).

And like said before, if you can spare the bandwidth for a couple hours after it done, just leave it open. Use the above version of the client and set the upload rate to a tolerable level that wont effect any other things you may be doing.

one last note, if your connection dies or what ever, or you need to stop the download, simply reconnect later and the BT client will see what has allreay been downloaded and proceed with getting fragments you are missing. This also means if yours is complete, you can reconnect later if you want to server. I do this sometimes when I see alot of users trying to download an anime episode but theres no seed, so in the end all the users will be missing a few fragments. I just connect and supply them the fragments. then disconnect once a few of the downloads are complete and turned into "seeds".

I have an old PC that I'm trying to put Linux on, I stumbled upon BT by accident last weekend. I started downloading Mandrake 9.1 on Sunday. I have a 256/128 connection. I like the fact that if you lose your connection or want to stop the download that if starts off where you stopped it. Today, Thursday, I only have 4% left. Hopefully this will work on my old system.

Too bad it downloads all 3 CDs. I could have done with just the first one or two.

Redhat next???

First off, I had already downloaded RH9 ISOs using BT before seeing this post... but anyways I set it up late at night, was getting like 10kb/s at first then around 1am it was up around 70kb/s, claimed 40hrs left with like 5% downloaded, pretty slow going... then when I got up the next morning at 8am it was done and was busy feeding other people at 10kb/s outgoing. Nice stuff! This is on Charter Cable Modem btw... BT is a nice fast system it seems to me, much better than eDonkey so far!

Next up is Mandrake 9.1 and hmm what else do I want...

I used BitTorrent and got all three CDs yesterday. It's kind of like Kazaa, except you don't search....
