NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT - news), the world's largest retailer, said on Tuesday that it officially launched its online music store, which it began testing in December

The store, which allows customers to download a song from the Internet for 88 cents, has added new artists and been expanded by 50 percent, the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer said.

Wal-Mart, whose service competes against 99-cent songs from Apple Computer Inc.'s (NasdaqNM:AAPL - news) iTunes music store, said that for the next two months it would be the exclusive supplier of songs from artists carried by the Curb Records label.
Looks like they are in WMA format for Media Player.

Big Ad right on their Home Page at: http://www.walmart.com

I like it! even if they're taking over the world. I like the preview feature as well, and .89c is better than .99c

It looks like it will be a battle, I hope they drive the prices to a quarter a song! By then, I will definately buy! Also, they should change the format to MP3's, for better portability

WARNING! WALMART CENSORS THEIR MUSIC CDS.
Psycho Listen 3:49 System Of A Down Toxicity (Edited) $0.88

The (Edited) next to the name means they probably censor their online music too those bastards. Walmart is evil anyways, I am boycotting walmart for endorsing and pushing virtual slave labor across the world and decreasing the living standards in the USA. I would rather buy a full copy from Itunes and pay an extra .12 cents. not hot.

Believe me, you should stop paying attention right at 'WMA'. The DRM junk makes the files complete garbage. If you are buying them to put them on a portable device, forget it. Unless you plan to make quality worse than a radio recording by burning to a CD then transcoding back to an MP3 that is. My folks got these for some songs, found quality was less than a 128vbr. That and none of their songs could transfer to their portable since WMP9 didn't support it, since Creative made it so only THEIR software can access it... more companies fighting over what you di with what you buy. Yay. [just my personal experience]

If you can find the CD used somewhere for $5, just get that, use EAC, and be done with it. The companies want to own what I pay for so much more than I do that the 'product' has become worthless. Big warnings for those who are planning it:

" Any song you download from Walmart.com is legally licensed for your use."
Translation: You don't own what you paid for. Getting the license if you loose the keyfile can be a pain.

"You need a WMA-compliant portable player that supports DRM. Not all media players that support WMA will support DRM. Please refer to the documentation that came with your player to determine if it is compatible."
BIG PROBLEM here. If you own an iPod or Zen, that means this won't work at all. Please be careful, this is what happened to me.

"Can I sell the music I download from Walmart.com? No."
There goes your investment... I wonder what happened to the guy trading iTunes songs/right of first sale.

"Can I send a music download as a gift to someone? Unfortunately, you cannot send music downloads as gifts at this time."
I tried getting a song for my folks, and I found out I couldn't transfer the DRM keyfile from my computer to theirs. Ouch.

Please, just try to find the CD used somewhere. This was a huge problem trying to deal with that they gave me, and I don't want anyone to 'try it out' and waste $8 and time like we did. It's a huge headache

Ditto that. I'm on a Walmart boycott too. We complain about the declining economy here yet we want everything dirt cheap which forces manufacturers to move production offshore.

The problem with walmart is also the fact that they distroy the cities they move in. They force work out of the USA and bankruptcy of such companies such as Rubbermaid who had to close most of their US plants to meet Walmarts price demands, and move them to a virtual slave labor camp in mexico and indonesia. Walmart then sells these items for much cheaper than competitors in the area, drives them out of business, then raises prices. In the meantime, their Nazi economics of no benefits, and keeping employees working right under full time hours and so on lowers the standard of living.

Leading by number of individual voters Democratic Presidental Candidate Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr. is being whited out of the race because of his guts to go after financeers and special intrests. This is his campaign against walmart:
Wal-Mart Is Not a Business, It's an Economic Disease

Kamazon,

Please take the thread crapping somewhere else.

FYI for you newbies: You cannot 'Thread Crap' on the 'hot deals' section. Walmart is censoring the music you purchase and worse, they don't mention it. On top of all of this, they are one of the biggest factors in distroying the US Economy. You're acting like a German in 1942 who says 'don't thread crap' when told don't buy soap and lampshades from a concentration camp, since people are killed for them.

If Wal-Mart started selling iPods for $99, something tells me your boycott would quickly end.

You would be right, however, walmart would not do that since they are trying to break into the online music market, and selling their competetors products that works best on Itunes below cost, would not make sence. They lose on both ends. Frankly, I would be very happy if Walmart did sell Itunes at $99 because they would lose a bunch of money AND drive many new Itunes customers! Hell, I would buy 2 or 3 lol.

Per the forum rules

"What about COURTESY?

No thread crapping. If the subject matter of a deal does not interest you, do not post negative comments about it, or about other members, in the thread.

Possibly the worst examples we have had of this have been in posts for free religious items, such as bibles, etc. If you want to discuss religion, or any other such non-computer topic, do it in our Off Topic forum. The discussions in that forum cover a wide range of topics, but needless flaming and rude, mean-spirited posts are not welcome there, either."

No thread crapping.

I know the rules quite well and if a deal is not hot, you can let other people know without it being thread crapping. I've been on this forum for years and that is how it has always been. Walmart is censoring their CDs without telling you, and thus it needs to be noted somewhere so unsuspecting people who think they are saving $0.10 are going to get a horribly done hack job at censoring the music. For petes sake, they censor the word 'cocaine' and it comes out completely messed up. Furthermore, Walmart is evil, and you are not saving money from shopping there, as you can see with how much money you will lose by having the buy the album again to get a uncensored version. If their going to censor your music without telling you, they could at least make it sound decent.

He raised legitimate concerns about the DRM and file type of this music. I don't see that as crapping, but rather spreading information on superior (albeit slightly more expensive) products (iTunes music store).

But, he also is saying WalMart is evil, bring a political discussion into it including links to LL, and not reading the WalMart page that does explain that the do post edited music and why ***clipped:

What does a song marked "(Edited)" mean?

An "edited" song is an alternate version of a song that has been recorded without explicit lyrics.

Basically, his comments belong in ATOT, not is a Hot Deals post.

I believe that WalMart is using the power of government to illegal seize property from its rightful owner, but it does not belong in this thread.

You have to dig to find the 'edited' description, most users will NOT do that, and I am doing a good service by telling people (all of whom didn't know) that these are censored and horribly so. Also, If I want to bring up the fact that walmart is an evil corporation which COSTING YOU MORE, than saving you more, I have the right to do so without it being called 'thread crapping'. You did not say anything to the other posters who posted before me just saying to F*** walmart, the reason you are comming after me is because I posted a link to Lyndon LaRouches site, whom you probably just for whatever reason don't like. Get off your 'thread nazi rant' buddy, I'm right and you know it.
