Download speeds fine, browsing really slow...

Title pretty much says it all, was wondering what the possibilities could be? I stil l download at about 600k/sec (im on cable, road runner) but browsing is really slow. It's been like this for a while now and it's gettin kinda annoying. It takes sites anywhere between 30-60sec to load, and sometimes longer. I've used FF, and I've used IE... no difference, it's still ridiculously slow. It's not just my computer either, my brother's and parents are slow in browsing as well... Is there a possible setting I might have accidently set while configuring my router? Or is it more than likely the roadrunner itself in which case i'd have to call the company? I've tried resetting my modem and router, no changes. I just got a new hard drive and with a fresh install it still ran slow... I have no idea what the problem is! Any help would be appreciated, thanks a lot!

as a test, try directly connecting to the internet without the router.

to be clear, there are 3 computers in the house?

if that doesn't help, perhaps try the Live! knoppix or ubunto CDs (no installation required, google them).

if its the same with those Live! CDs, this will rule out most spyware/viruses.
in knoppix use netcardconfig to configure internet access. it has a GUI.

i tried connecting just my computer directly to the modem and that seemed to be the issue as everything was running great when i did that. I have a d-link DI-604 router, is there some sort of setting that would slow the internet down in a router? This has completely mind boggled right now, i dont remember changing any settings! any thoughts? thanks for the kind reply nova

I have that same router and it's always worked well for me. Try resetting it to factory default via the reset button on the back. If you just have a typical home network, the factory default should work fine for you.

I would have posted this question in the Networking section, but that shouldn't be a problem.

I had a DI-604 router that I used for about 3 1/2 years before it failed. I had no problems with it up until the very end when it started to fail. How old is yours?

As far as I know, you can't just switch from modem-to-router-to-computer to modem-to-computer and vice versa without doing some software changes in your system. Isn't that true?

My DI-604 is over 4 years old. You might need to clone your MAC address on the router for it to work with the modem. I seem to remember having to do that with Comcast back in Maryland. If everything is set to auto, you should be able to plug your modem into your computer and get online within 30 seconds. If the router is set at factory default, it should automatically assign your computer an IP. Did you try resetting it?

Though the router was working fine, till recently, you might also try a firmware update, if available.

that as #1

also make sure the firewall on the router is accepting connections (try DMZing if u want, a pure option).

dont forget a router, especially with 3 comps, reduces your general browsing speed by 1/3 usually (its not always exact). this means that u have to make connections more direct and smoother. try screwing around with settings of your router and see if it works out.

i have a D-LINK DI-514, never any problems.
