Download Streaming Webcast to listen offline

Morning everyone.

My school offers review webcasts online that stream off their site. I have a fairly long commute each morning and wanted watch/listen to them offline.
Any (hopefully free and/or cheap) programs that will download the videos? I also need to transfer them to my tablet, but that will hopefully be easy once I have them in mp4 or whatever format.

The IT guys have not been helpful. Their recommendation is that I just stream them off my phone. Not a good solution as I don't want to waste the data or battery life.. And some people can't seem to understand that you can't get 4G everywhere you go.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You can ask the producer but I'd be surprised if the steam weren't copy-protected, both video and audio, which may restrict the choice of a capture app. Secondly perhaps the school will make the files available but that too could be problematic if there is a copywrite issue.

I was a little worried about the copyright stuff... and I think I am getting stonewalled by the Uni and the IT people because they don't want to deal with the copyright stuff.
I don't understand why it is an issue.. I am purchasing the service with my tuition, I have complete access, and I am not recording them so I can post them on the internet or so I can sell them on the blackmarket or some back alley video store.

I used to have something that could copy video's from youtube, but that was a pretty long time ago. That was a whole pain in the ass too.. since the video was of me but I didn't post the video, so I ended up backdooring with this software.

My google searches seem to take me to websites of ill-repute. I'd prefer something not loaded with malware, etc. but I'd really like to take advantage of this commute time.

Seems to me your problem is time. Once you are mobile in the process of commute, streaming is very questionable. So, it would have to be streamed and recorded before you become mobile. That begs the question, how long is the material being streamed, and is it available early enough? There are packages available that can record and store the stream in a variety of formats. The recorded download can be transferred to your tablet or whatever.

Another approach would be to see if the material of be streamed could be downloaded. That would save a lot of time.

That's exactly my issue. I think I could screen capture the whole video while running it.. but that would be a big waste of time unless I watched it at the same time, then why even download it?

Ideally, I want to go to where the video is posted, right click, and select download video. There is currently no option to do that.. and I was told by the IT people that they do not have that as an option. They were being really unhelpful, basically just kept saying they can't do that.

Like I said earlier, I used to have a program that pulled videos off of youtube. Didn't have to watch it or anything, it just started downloading it.. I assume tricking the site that it was streaming it while instead was downloading it. I am pretty sure it is a copyright gray area, but I am on a time restriction and really would like to utilize the commute time. Being the old guy in school, I actually have a full time job so don't have ample time to lounge around and stream videos. That argument didn't help with the IT guys or the class management people who sent me back to the IT people.

You can also Right Click on the web page, select View Page Info .. you will see a lot of the links used by that page. You might be able to decipher which one is actually the web cast.

You say about copywrite infringement:

I don't understand why it is an issue.. I am purchasing the service with my tuition, I have complete access, and I am not recording them so I can post them on the internet or so I can sell them on the blackmarket or some back alley video store.

A benefit of streaming is that it reduces piracy, as you can now appreciate.

Have you inquired whether the lessons are copywrited ?

My cynical character suggests that tuition guarantees you nothing more that a transition-enabled washroom and a lecture Hall.

Yes, yes. I get that everyone is very concerned about their copyrights .. would hate for a school to freely distribute information.
I have asked all I can and get walled at every point, it is a combination of paranoia that I am going to sell it on the black market and laziness from them not wanting to make another solution.

I am getting pushed into using a less than legitimate solution.

Also, not to be nitpicky, but it is copyright, not copywrite. Copyright is the rights to copy. Copywrite is writing copy (used mostly in advertising). Mad Men had copywriters.. Which they would then probably copyright so no other copywriter could steal their cleaver copy.

Maybe you can find something with this search...
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=capture+streaming+media+vlc&ia=web

I have limited data, so I don't want to work on it myself, but you may find something useful. wget is also an option that might work, but the media url may be obfuscated with javascript nonsense.
Thanks. This has been interesting. Found some potential ideas on here.. not sure if they will work but worth a try.
