Does this software support a DDS3 SCSI tape drive?

Anyone, Bueller... Bueller...

No, it does not. The latest version doesn't even support any tape device either. So, CD-R's, DVD-R's and/or other hard drives will have to suffice for this product.

Free is good though.

Are you asking if this will ghost your OS image?

Although I'm not 100% sure, I don't think this is a ghosting software. I think it just saves lots of information that you may forget to backup. So if your hdd crashes it seems like you'd have to do a fresh install of Windows, then after you have an OS running you can use the backup file created by WinBackup to restore your settings and saved files. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

It doesn't seem to be able to do a backup set that needs to span over multiple disks. Can anyone confirm this?

I get an error "unable to create backup file even though I have the directory selected. Files are not in use and I have admin rights to the PC.

It didn't work for me either. It couldn't find my DVD burner. It's an old version, and I suspect the program has a limited number of burners, etc. it will support.

I wasn't all that impressed with the user interface, either. It may be fine for those that are intimately familiar with file extensions and file locations, but it was a bit too user driven for me to rely on it for something as critical as data backup.

There is also a small nag screen to upgrade to their 2.0 each time it starts.

I was able to start the backup to a network drive with the right permissions. Thought I would see what would happen if I tried to bu up my C drive. The program gives you this option and I don't see anything in the manual which states not to try to backup windows folder etc. No programs running, stopped 3rd party running processes - it got through about 18g of my 23g C drive and hung up on a VB dll.
Had to force quit the program and restart. Now the program won't load
" initialization error" "error reading iL1 ->Bitmap: Stream read error" "Cannot create file C:\ProgramFiles\LIUtility\Winbackup\id_cache1.86.dat"

Doesn't make sense that it would back up windows and shared dll's, etc on a system it is using to create the backup.

Might work if u are backing up a C drive on another computer to the one you are using though. Or just do data files only.

Just as a side remark.

Shareware developers are trying to find ways to sell their products (Not a bad idea, after all they are trying to make a living).

For many years the main stream of shareware was time bomb, or selective crippling. In many cases this approach antagonizes prospective clients since it entails Negative strategy.

Recently it seems that a new ?fashion? starts to emerge. I.e. developers offer for free the ?real staff?, by giving clean older versions of their products.

The rational is to create a positive approach with the hope that the users would like the product and if they get use to it would buy the Newer version.

I think this is a much better approach then the Time Bomb/Crippling Approach.

Would it work to enhance revenue? I would not predict, time will show.

As you can see from earlier comments in this thread, many of us found very significant deficiencies with Winbackup 1.86. Does the current version have the same problems-I don't know, and frankly am not going to make the effort to find out.

I'm a firm believer in shareware, and have bought quite a few. I don't think releasing outdated versions as free will promote shareware sales, but that's just my opinion.

Thanks to the OP who brought this to our attention. I just wish it had been more worthwhile.

Anyone know if this backs up open files? Or can anyone recommend a backup program that will backup an open database file.
