Using WinXP sp2 for OS.

Does anyone know how to find a hidden file that is on the machine but can not be found with a standard windows file search (have unchecked box for hidden system files so I do see all files supposedly). I have gone to a command prompt window to search and do not find it through that means either.

If I try to run the file from my download list in Chrome, it will let me run the file (so I know the file is actually there and it works), but I just want to remove it or change the attribute to the file so that it is not hidden any longer. Any ideas?

Does Chrome not give you the option to open the file's folder?

EDIT >> Have you actually SAVED the file?

If you're downloading an executable file (such as files with .exe, .dll, or .bat extensions), you'll first have to accept the download by clicking the Save button that appears in the file button on the downloads bar. This step helps prevent malicious software from automatically downloading to your computer. If you're not sure about the contents of the download, click the Discard button instead. Unsaved downloads are deleted when you exit Google Chrome.

Yes, I have clicked on the "show in folder" link, but it doesn't do anything.
If i click on the filename, it will attempt to install the .exe file that downloaded, but I just cancel and do not continue. Normally all my other files show in my download folder, but not this one.

To make matters worse, before trying to run the file, I checked my download folder and didn't see it in there so I went and downloaded the file again (so I have another file with name "... (1).exe". That file will run too but I can not find it either.

I searched the whole C: drive (only drive on laptop) and it doesn't find it and the download folder doesn't see it.

I did an attrib command for all .exe files in the folder, and nothing. I ran the 'attrib -h' for the actual file name, and it just says file not found lol.

This is tickin me off now and no utility I have found on the net will seem to find this darn invisible file.

I am sure the file is saved. A friend of mine said that it might have put a "temp" file in my cache but I do not see it with a partial file name. It does seem to be fully saved though cause both files will attempt to run when clicking on them from the download folder.

Your friend is most likely correct.
I'll bet it "expanded" into temp files ready for install and those files dont containg the original file name, which is why you cannot find it doing a search.

What i would i do?
If I REALLY REALLY wanted to know for sure, i'd do a google search for the file and try downloading/saving it from another site, then extract it into a folder i made myself to see what the extracted files are, then hunt those filenames down doing a search.

This seems to be a CHrome bug, I've seen it as well. Guessing the file is in your temp directory and never got 'moved' to the download dir...

I would just use a better browser. Opera, Firefox, or even IE would work...

Well, I finally found the file. It's strange though because I couldn't find it in a search previously, but I shortened the name and used wildcards and lo and behold, it was in the cache. Funny that the search didn't bring it up the last time. I have since deleted the duplicate file and moved the other to a different directory.

I have been on the dev channel for Chrome for awhile and though it does have its faults, it is a clean looking browser that allows me to maximize my screen space on my small 14.1" laptop. I do have Firefox, Flock, Opera, Chrome and also IE6 on the lappy, and though each has their own qualities, I've been using Chrome for specific reasons.
