Is there a DPAD FAQ? How can i be sure that the TeAm is getting credit for my production. I have DPAD running on one work PC for now (1.0GHz PIIIm) I have a user.txt file in a muon directory that has [TA]compudog. I understand the client will upload when it hits 10K? Just so the TeAm gets credit. I am running the background version.

TIA!

compudog,

Not a FAQ that I'm aware of per se, but here is the "official" stuff. There's a link to the project discussion forum on that page as well.

Note that the client does not flush @ 10K. It's default setting is 100K. You are just able to use manualsend when it hits 10K.

as long as user.txt is [TA]compudog, you'll show up in the stats here when you dump.

Welcome aboard!

Um, you asked about a FAQ?

There's a gigantic gif farther up the page.

Ummm... Anyone know if DPAD will hyperthread clients. All my machines are Intel P4s or Xeons. And, are there any destructions for doing so?

One of you guys want to walk me through this?

Don't have it running on any dualies myself but I remember seeing something where you have to edit the config file for more then one process. If you are running xp I have a service install I can email you that soni was kind enough to send me that makes it very easy to install.

just looked at the config file and it looks like you just have to change a couple of lines from
thread:1
to
thread:2
at least that's my guess.

By all means, send it along, all boxes have XP. I've seen destructions for this somewhere, but can't recall which team forum. Hope service install allows for 4 instances for the Xeon... Also looking for stats comparing output of P4s and 2xXeons running multiple instances vs. single.

You ain't watiching at my stats If you do, you would know, that you are in TA on position 22, and 277 overall (+15 from yesterday!).
So, TA is getting Mpts from you... Your production is not wasted...

As it was said, client upload results at 100K, and you can manually upload results if results.txt is over 10K !

I ran DPAD on some hyperthreaded pentiums and it works great! Just got to change the config file like Freewolf said.
I've switched them to SETI for now...:Q

Thanks, Freewolf, I'll download it from soni's website.

Now! A single instance of DPAD on my 2xXeon with HT enabled only utilizes 25% of the available cycles, a single instance with HT disabled only utilizes 50%, and I'm highly allergic to wasting cycles. In order to run multiple instances of DPAD on my 2xXeon and P4s I need merely set-up separate folders, i.e., DPAD1-2-3-4, etc,, and run them them individually. I would, however, like to see some comparative stats before I take the plunge.

Also, will someone please clue-in this n00b regarding sub-teams? The TA site is so full of interesting technical fact (and sheer opinion) that my old 8088 MK-I, MOD-I personal CPU has a hard time keeping up with who's who, what, when, why, and where. I'm here, I'm sure, but just where is here? 2004 looks mighty challenging for this old WU hound.

Ask me about my P4P (Prescott) 2.8.

Thanks in advance to all you Soopr Jeenyuses.

Hey Kokomo!

Great questions you have there...IN order to get full use out of your client i suggest chaning the config.txt in the DPAD folder to the following:
Threads: 4

This would run 2 processes per CPU thereby utilizing 100%...

Results.txt is where all the temporary results are stored until uploaded. This disapppears once the results have been uploaded and re-appears once a result is ready. Results.dat is where a history of all the results are kept.

Also, The way dpad works is that the quantity of the experimental transfers is important but also the quality (i.e. the highest possible muon transfer). The client churns the data and spits out a muon transfer value. Over time the client *learns* from itself, through prior experiments it has conducted, and improves its transfers..

This DC project is used to back-up the muon Factory that is going to be finalized around 2015 at a cost of over a billion dollars & also there is a body of research that believes that by bombarding radioactive waste w/ muons this toxic waste can become neutral + harmless.
Hope this has helped

For the newbies checking out the thread...

Setting up DPAD by DanC.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=39&threadid=1209514&FTVAR_MSGDBTABLE=

Here's the short version of how to get started.

1. Create a directory called "Muon"
2. Download this zip file to your muon directory http://stephenbrooks.org/muon1/v433.zip
3. Unzip the above file
4. Copy this text, and paste into a file named "results.dat" and "sampleresults.dat" http://stephenbrooks.org/muon1/sample500.txt
5. Open notepad, enter "[TA]Username" - where "Username" is YOU!
6. Save above file as "user.txt"
7. Invoke "muon1.exe" (graphical version) or "muon1_background" (background mode) or "muon1_cmdline" (DOS window)

That's it. You're running. The client will create a file called "results.txt" - this is what will be sent to the server upon upload of results. You may choose to wait until it gets to 100Kb in size - then it will dump (using FTP) on its own, or you can use manual upload. In any event - you'll need to have at least 10kb in results.txt in order to dump.

The only other thing is making an adjustment to "config.txt" if you have multiple processors.

Pretty easy!

Thanks, I think!

Now, FYI, I've run SETI (7800 WUs), SoB (3TcEMS), and RC5-"whatever" for another team, so some of my n00b paint is wearing thin enough to show the primer beneath, if not the metal.

More questions:

1) I responded to Smoke's (not a "moderating modulator" --- or was that "modulating moderator"?) well-written plea for SETI assistance. Here I iz. If I move now to DPAD, will Smoke forgive me, or sic the SETI Police on me? I realize it's my choice, but I prefer to be on a team, and help accomplish team goals when I'm sober, which is seldom.

2) Same Question as before!!! If I do the "[TA] me" thing for DPAD, am I Team AnandTech --- all by my lonesome --- or am I on a sub-team, whatever that means? What's Rebel Alliance, Taboo, and a number of others all about? Please keep your responses short, succinct, and use little bitty words. I was a Marine once upon a time, but they found out I could read and write, and that my parents were married, so...

I believe I'll have another

Kokomo, I'm doing SETI to, 8097wu. All my main rigs are on SET and the slower ones are for DPAD...for now, I would like to do SETI till the end, cause it's my main DC project and I don't want to stay with the TeAm till the END!!!

The "[TA] me" thing for DPAD, puts you in Team AnandTech , check out the stats

Rebel Alliance is a "sub Team" with different members.

Taboo is Team AnandTech Booster team (in SETI...for now...), they help longtime members achieve goals ( like 5k or 10k) by crunching in their name.

amdxborg:

Ah, I believe I felt the blast of wind as you passed me by in SETI. I thought "Where'd he go?" The little voice in my head a la the Movie Top Gun said, "Where'd WHO go?" Hope you're chuckling...

So! If I stay with SETI Smoke (not a moderator) will not say terrible things about me, and if I jump into DPAD I run that risk? If you advise me, I can blame it all on you. If not, I have to own my decision and take responsibility? What a deal!

I'm terribly bored with SETI, but I'll hang for a while if that's what TA needs. DPAD is all loaded and ready to go in all machines. Vote early, vote often.

Hey Kokomo!,

Well the SEti team does require assistance and DPAD is going to be aroudn for a while. After all The client hasn't reached its Full-fledged Final Version 5.xxx..its still 4.4xxx. Seti IS ending (hopefully soon ) so ...the choice is up to you...just remember DPAD IS way COOL!

Rebel Alliance is a group of friends that got together (much like the Federation and BNT) and recruited others under one big Sub-team of [TA] for Seti...they,, *hopefully*,, are moving to DPAD after SETI ends

Taboo is a group of ppl (some that crunch seti normally..some that dont [like me]) who banded together to bring long-time seti contributers on TA their next 5K or 10K milestone...

All you have to do to join TA for DPAD is create a text file and label it user.txt......inside of this file just type in [TA]Kokomo WHen you upload ur results you will show up in the stats!

Hope that answers ur questions succinctly!

The Rebel Alliance was formed by ICXRa and myself, Since then we have growned to around 8 people including jmeadlock,Geoffs, d347h, Dan,Bill, and Crissy,
We are active in Seti, D2ol, TSC, Dpad, and Folding@home.
We formed the miniteam to gets more of our friends crunching and it seems to have work as at least half the team would not be crunching if not for the team and me badgering them to join it
Bty, we are always looking for new members for the team

Thanks for the info Overkiller. I just downloaded the new client and copied everything to the old directory. I hope everything works ok. I did a manualsend before that just in case and checked that the user.txt file was still ok.
