For the life of me I can not play a bad guy in an RPG. I mean come on, this is a game a role playing game. I just can't be a jerk. Or a female for that matter. Hmmmph.

Also, I've used my speedpad N52te for as long as I can remember, haven't touched a keyboard in a game since the mid 2000's? I have worn all the black off the keys and may wear clean through the W soon.

I have the keys at the standard wasd layout with ctrl shift and tab on the left. The dpad is assigned numbers one to 8. The button above the dpad shifts all the keys to ESc then F1-F12, the wheel is up arrow and down arrow, my mouse wheel side to side rocker is left and right arrow. Been able to play every game in every genre easily with this set up for 7-8 years.

Isn't that the point of role-playing? Aren't you supposed to be free to explore unfamiliar personality types?

No, you have to be online. But you can just, you know, ignore everyone else and do your thing.

One thing to consider, though, is that during a playthrough, you have a specific set of missions that require teams to complete. I think it's ~10-12 series of story-based missions. These are more or less separate from the main story, and you can completely ignore them if you want.

However, these are actually directly related to the KoToR storyline, so if that whole Bioware Star Wars world interests you, then you probably want to play through those. I think the last one of those is also the final mission of the main story...so you at least have to group for that. You get KotoR history and lore and stuff like that on the main game, doing sidequests and whatever, but to get continuation of that story (it is mostly a running sidestory to the ToR story), you would need to do those.

Thanks, maybe I'll check it out.

I have played through KoToR 1/2 a couple of times each.

Thanks, maybe I'll check it out.

I have played through KoToR 1/2 a couple of times each.

It's worth it. Playing it solo will be OK, but if you can at least convince another friend to do a different class (same die though, jedi or dark side) you can then see a lot of both the class quests.

I played with my bro, I was sith inquisitor and he was a bounty hunter. It was a blast. Once the end-game kicked-in, it got old fast, but the game up to that was a lot of fun. The class stories were excellent...

Back to RPGs....I think it's fun to play an 'evil' character when it's 'fun' to be evil in the game. Case in point KOTOR 1/2 or TIE Fighter (sorry - all SW examples ). I actually would have a hard time being evil in the DA world because it does a good job of being realistic and gritty in it's hard choices. But, it would be fun for example in the following example (spoiler):

Don't read if you have not yet finished the 'Wicket Eyes and Wicked heart' Main quest:
Wicket Eyes and Wicked heart - Instead of just being able to select the queen, her advisor or her cousin, it would be cool to throw everyone under the bus and put yourself on the throne or absorb the country into the Inquisition. This could be a kind of 'evil' option where the player character consolidates power directly, instead of gathering 'allies'

I could never really get into TOR. The party member interactions that are so crucial to other BioWare games are really threadbare in that game.

My first playthrough of any RPG like this is usually the "me" playthrough. Mage (or similar), diplomatic, male white human guy. Basically, who I would actually like to be in such a setting. Later playthroughs are used for mean characters, female characters, different races, etc.

IMO some games are actually more fun playing as a d-bag. KOTOR was great as a bad guy. I also enjoyed the Fallout's and BG 2 as a bad guy.

Although I always play as a good guy first.

Yeah, give it a shot. I've played dudes here and there, but I naturaly lean towards creating a female character.

One thing I've always wanted to do is play a complete jerk of a character, but no matter how hard I try I always end up making nice guy choices. One day I am going to try and force a play-through making only the jerk/bad guy choices.

KT

KOTOR 2 is a great game for playing dark side.

what does that do? I never actually played KoTOR 2. I was between things/too busy to play games in that time period, so missed a lot of stuff.

I keep thinking I would try it out at some point, but I always hear bad things.

Well it fills in the missing stuff,

You might not have known this, but Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords had content taken out of the game prior to launch. A group of modders decided to restore the content, this process began in 2009. Now, three years later, the finished project, The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod, is complete!

"content."

so missions, skills, characters, all sorts of stuff like that? I may look into it if I ever get around to purchasing/playing that. There is steam sale coming up--so it should be available for ~2 bucks or so....

More like entire quests and areas that weren't complete and/or tested in enough time for launch. Some areas were just 'Door-ed off' and some quests referred to in dialogue didn't actually exist. There might be even more. There is a lot of info about it online....meant to play through it again with that added sometime. Great game.

FYI, the game is on sale for $40 at Walmart for those who haven't picked it up yet. I don't think I have finished the first dragon age and I haven't touched its sequel. Am I missing much of the story or is it okay to indulge into Inquisition right away?

I'm still early in the storyline but so far completely new story, you also play a new character so can jump into DA:I with no major issues.

I'm sure fellow members here will jump in with more feedback.

You can be introduced into the story without Dragon Age Origins or DA2. Some of the stuff which you may not know, actually comes up in dialog and you can ask about it, where as those who have played the previous games would not need to ask. The story is completely new, even if they have some related topics. If you had played earlier games, you'd likely get some nostalgia from old characters that show up.

there are recurring characters from the previous 2 dragon age games--I guess it depends on your value that you want to place in those characters, whether you would find their appearance surprising. A lot of the lore is about the events in the previous games, but you can basically look at that as history. It had been so long since I played the first 1 that I might as well have not played it.

I skipped the 2nd DA, and there is a significant amount of story from that, but I honestly didn't feel as though I was missing too much.

There is already Leliana appearing in the first cut scenes. I remember her as being a goofy or shy character in the DAO. And I am pretty sure she used to have a French accent. And now she looks quite ruthless with an English accent.

I'm not certain on the accents, but I'm quite certain it is the same voice actor.

Looking her up, it is confirmed she is the same voice actor in all 3 games and she is French. I didn't think her accent sounded English.

If Leliana - to you - has an English accent in DA:I ... then I really want to hear what's a French accent. She has the exact same accent in DA:I as the one she had in DAO, not to mention of course the exact same voice actress. She's only different writing-wise, but other than that she's almost identical (saying "almost" because she's harsher in Inquisition certainly, but it's usually situational; when circumstances demand it, in her book anyway).

Corrected!!!!... "KOTOR2 is great with Restoration Pack " http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-sith-lords-restored-content-mod-tslrcm

Only way to play that game .

I havent tried it with the restoration pack. Some day I hope to. I realize the ending was abrupt. In fact, I just sat stunned for a minute thinking there must be more than this. I tried to play throught it a couple of years ago with the mods, but could never get them to install properly.

What I meant was that the general atmosphere is much darker than the first game, so going dark side seems to fit a lot better with the general flow of the game. The first game seems to play better to me with a triumphant light side ending, much like the first Star Wars movie.

I played them both, but honestly dont remember much of DA2. I just replayed DA1, so that lore is fresh in my mind. In any case, the previous games seem pretty incidental to the new game, at least so far.

And I agree with another poster about Lilleana. She is much different in this game than DAO. TBH, I liked her better previously. She just seems like a b**** in this game.

Edit: I actually kind of like Cassandra in this game. She is harsh, but dedicated to what she feels is a good cause. And I love to hear her accent and banter with the other party members.

She's grown very dark in her new roles. Being a spy master has changed her, but it is still the same French voice actress talking. Though it is possible she learned English from someone from another country and has some mixed accent.
