Will it stay there? On a vertically mounted mobo (A7V266-E)? I've got it and it's a hefty beastie! Is a Mobo designed to take this much weight? Or am I better off buying a desktop case?

Can't be sure, but i suppose it can't be worse than those all copper designs. I just helped a friend build a computer last weekend with a Dragon Orb and it's been running non-stop since Sat (5-days) with no problems... the clip itself was pretty tight too so i'm sure it will hold just fine.

Waaaaaa!

I fitted the Orb onto an existing A7V133-E board with a Duron 950 to check airflow, noise, and fit. Powered it up and, by heck this is a noisy fan...

Anyway, took it off, put the Cooler Master DP5-6I11 back on, and the damned thing won't post...

How gutted am I? A lot. Have I killed the PC? But how....?

Dragon Orb 3 is a notorious Athlon crusher because of its poor clip and excessive weight. It takes just as much force to put on a heatsink as it does to remove one so you could have crushed the cpu core taking the Drorb3 off.

Magicthyse, I'm sorry to say it, but there's a very high chance that the DO has killed your cpu. Consider yourself lucky that it wasn't a more costly cpu, my DO3 killed my 1.4 T-Bird. I had installed it 20 times (because of trouble with the mobo, wouldn't boot unless you replaced the cpu each time, probably because the cpu already was chipped because of the DO3) and not had any problems except for the cpu getting a small crack in one corner but it worked fine on both a Asus A7V and MSI K7T Turbo Raid. Then I got a ECS K7S5A and had the problems mentioned above, then one day it wouldn't even boot. I got a new mobo because of all the whining I had heard about the mobo being bad but it still wouldn't post. got a new cpu and behold, it worked fine. So the DO3 had crushed my core, grr.
Now I'm using it as a paperwight like Dejo said.

Edit, oh yeah, I forgot to mention how loud that thing is. My current system with 3 46.5cfm 80mm fans is quite a bit less noisy compared to the old system with a DO3 and two more silent 80mm fans.

The thing that concerns me about that particular HSF is the highth. Putting the weight further away from the board adds leverage to the HSF wanting to tilt downwards.

There's no problem with the weight of the DragonOrb, it's clip is VERY thight and thus it sits as tight and securely as a hsf using the clips on the socket can. The tightness of the clip also accounts for the crushed cores though. There's no danger of it falling off, and if the mobo is screwed properly into the case there should be no problems with the weight, even if it weren't it's not so heacy that it would bend the mobo.

Thanks folks - it's a crushed core I guess.

BO**OCKS!!!!!

So, ok, DO3 is a very pretty paperweight.
Grrrrr. I guess if it wasn't broken, I shouldn't have tried to change it...

Magicthyse, have you tried the cpu in another mobo to be sure it's dead? If it truly is dead, well, then it's dead, you've now joined the club of people who've crushed Atlhon cores. We understand your frustration, it's too easy to crush the core with the DO, just be happy that it wasn't a more costly cpu.
