<< any day now, they are going to be worth less than $99. >>

I can believe that. Aren't they going to stop producing games and help out their competitors instead (Microsoft and Sony)?

Dreamcast production will soon cease.
As for software... it's up to the third party vendors how long they will continue to produce for Dreamcast. Whether Sega will make games for DC, i don't really know. The likes are positive though since it is software...

and x-box seems to probably be DC compatible...

DC on Xbox rumour is false, at least until Tokyo Game Show.

DC still has about 100 games this year, so at 99 bucks, it's a definite steal. Even if no new games came out, there's so many great games for DC that you'd be dumb not to get it. Games like Jet Grind Radio, Grandia II, Skies of Arcadia, Virtua Tennis, NFL2K1, Phantasy Star Online, Test Drive LeMan, MSR, Sega GT, Soul Calibur, NBA2K1, Shenmue, list goes on and on.

Tons of new games too like Shenmue II, PSO2 (maybe), Gundam, 18-Wheeler American Trucker, Virtua Tennis 2, NBA2K2 and NFL2K2, World Series Baseball 2K2, NHL2K2, Flogian Bros, tons of other stuff I can't remember.

I actually just bought my DC like a month ago (sucks, had to pay 149) but its a darn good system with tons of great games. It's a next-gen system (will a lot of life left in it) priced like a today's system. PSOne? or DC...hmmm?

Dreamcast news

Read, and know. I bought mine from best buy on Saturday. I still think it's a good deal, (Phantasy Star Online, baby!) and I'll be picking up the Broadband adapter in a week or so. They've got at least 30 more titles to release this year, and they've got a whole assload of games that are around $20, and are just fantastic. Good deal, great system. This sucker will be sure to tide me over until PS2 gets worth it, or XBox comes out,....

Actually, that whole "Sega is going to stop producing Dreamcasts" thing was a rumor, as far as I heard. They denied everything and claimed that their plans for the DC were "agressive and far-reaching" or something like that.

Whether the price goes down from $99 doesn't really matter, it's still a steal at $99 for what you get. Even if they stop making games tomorrow (which they are not) this system is worth much more than $99 with the discount priced games that are available right now. And Unreal Tournament will be released soon with on-line support unlike the PS2 UT which can only be played multiplayer on a split screen (What were Sony thinking with that screw-up?). $99 is NOTHING for a system this good.

Geez doesn't the PSX1 and N64 cost $99? Looks like Sega is making way for their new console.

why on earth would sega stop producing dreamcast? i thought they were doing so well selling this stuff. at $99 the demand for this hardware will definitely goes up (especially among the "budget-constraint" pirates who downloaded DC games).

Ok i would like to clear up a few things here!

Thump553 - Dc games use a proprietary format known as GD-Rom these are not the same as standard CD's because these hold 1 gig as oposed to cd's that hold 700mb

BiGNuTz - that attitude is part of the reason that Sega is having financial trouble, but to answer your question yes you can and no i will not tell you how but i am sure some other lowlife will.

Now just for the general info. Sega will drop the price of the Dreamcast to $99.85 US as of February 4th, 2001. some stores may unoffically do this sooner than that date. Sega has over 100 titles planed for launch this year, there are also many other great dc titles that are out there and buying a dc is a great idea now! sega will be making games for other systems but will continue to support the dc as long as it is profitable. they are also getting out of hardware totally, but have licenced the dc platform to other companies like pace and the rumored microsoft deal that will be confirmed on 3-31-01 at the TGS. I hope that helped with some of the rumors.

It's a sad sad day today. Sega management should be re-evaluated. I think it's a big mistake for Sega to stop the dreamcast, just when it is gaining strong momenturm here in the U.S.
The set-top box deal with Pace is going to fail, nobody wants to buy games that they can't even hold in their hands. The only good thing I can see out of this is that Sega will probably make profit again and hopefully when they break even, they'll consider releasing another console.

Has anyone here gotten the NetBSD port to run on their Dreamcast?

(I know, I know, that was the topic on /. this weeks Slashback...)

for $99 that could be a fun toy.

First off they are not getting out of the console buisness no more of the current dreamcast will be made because they have enough inventory in the wherehouses 2nd they are developing/porting for 5 games for sony and making sequels on the DC they are also licensing out the DC on a chip technology to set top box maker Pace, plans to bring it to PC also are in motion. When the demand for DC grows a new console based on the DC on a chip will be made. This is why it'll drop to clear out the inventory and make way for the new cheaper design.
THANK you
