I do not recommend Dreamhost if you plan on hosting a business or any website where uptime is of importance. Their restrictions on CPU usage will prevent you from ever reaching the 1 TB of bandwidth on your shared plan (probably even if you just had static HTML pages), their support is slower than other hosts than I've had (although it is within 24-48 hours), and after going through repeated server downtimes as well as database server downtimes or just random outages, I just flat out don't trust them to keep an important site online.

Agreed. Heck, I wouldn't use it for even a small hobbyist site trying to attract visitors. Tons of research out there showing how downtime combined with poor performance will severely destroy your presence.
After all, what good is a hosting account if the server isn't up? It's like buying a car that might not run, what the point of having it?

I have two sites hosted with them. They are great so far. My sites have stayed up, and their support is pretty good - they've replied to me pretty quickly.

IF you guys don't mind, please use me as your referral. I can even give you $$ off your initial hosting plan too. PM me or email me.

I've been using Dreamhost for a while now, I'm very happy with them. I think my site only gets something like 7MB of useage though, so I'm pretty minor. No idea how happy / unhappy I would be if I ran a big bandwidth site.

That's exactly it, they might as well call it unlimited disk space and bandwidth, realistically if all you have is large sized files to serve, you can only go through 120-140GB of bandwidth per month.

How exactly are you supposed to get files in/out using a service of some sort like FTP/Apache/etc.?

Agreed, though I'd recommend being less interested in uptime and more in the stability of the company. If the company goes under, those uptime guarantees are worth the same as 1 million shares of WebVan stock. I'd also stay away from any host that ever claims to have 100% uptime. Even the largest companies I've used at my job (IBM, Worldcom, AT&T) all experienced at least some very minimal downtime from time to time.

I'm actually in the market right now for an inexpensive .NET 2.0 hosting provider that doesn't have a limit on the amount of DB space, so if anyone knows of any....discountasp.net and crystaltech.com have been the most promising I've found thus far...

OVERSELLING at these prices... Without firsthand experience, I can tell you this is too good of a deal to be a super host. Now I've heard good and bad about dreamhost, but I would personally not go with them...

$10 shouldn't be getting you more than 1gb

I used Dreamhost for several months utilizing 3GB space and ~150Gb bandwidth/month and never had any problems.

I'm using Dreamhost for simple file sharing/downloading. At $10 for the year, I'm not too excited if I become bandwidth limited/CPU limited or just plain limited......

I've been using Dixiesys for a couple small web sites since way back and have been very pleased with the service there. The plan I'm on has carried forward from year to year.

The other hosting I've done has been with the free 1and1 hosting (both the 3-yr plan and the 6 month free one)

Eh, I have them and they're either good or bad depending on the day. They really do oversell though. My service was good for a while so I decided I'd resell it for a few bucks a month to a few friends and ever since then I am getting constant emails about the box my account is on having problems :/ -- Guess I'm going to have to eat the Paypal fee and do some refunds to my buddies.

I've been with Dreamhost since getting in on the $9.24/yr deal back in July...I've only been using it for my photo gallery (don't really have any other use for a website at this time)...performance is usually good and I've never really had any downtime problems except for that one power outage in LA a few months back. I'm very happy with the service thus far. I do have my concerns about them overselling, but I make backups of my gallery whenever I update it. If they do happen to go down, I'm only out a few dollars and the time it takes to find a new host. Since it's just a personal site, it's no big deal to me.
