be aware that once you get alittle traffic on your website they shut it down for about 10 mins. I have been using dreamhost for about a year now and every time I start getting some traffic it buckles and shuts down. Thats dreamhost for you.

This hosting service is ONLY good for VERY basic pages, file storage.

Its a great deal for beginners or experimental websites but thats it. This is NOT a serious hosting service. Sure the specs seem amazing but what they dont tell you is that you get only a TINY TINY portion of the servers resources and if you cross them say bye bye to your website for 10-15mins.

I have to say I have been using dreamhost for about 2 years and lately I have started to notice the same sort of behavior, although it's not a direct result of getting traffic at a given time. But yeah, my sites will suddenly become inaccessible for the same period of time.

Great deals but it's about time I upgrade to a better host. Meh :|

I agree, dreamhost is only good for very basic pages and file storage. I have been with them for about 12 months and a quick scan of my email shows about 8 outage reports in that time. Webmail from them is also painful and outage prone. I have some other hosting accouts with 1&1 and 8-95.com and they are both great and rarely if ever have issues.

You get what you pay for....

I've had no problems using dreamhost with complicated php pages, forums, database driven statistics sites, and about 500gb bandwidth a month. They also have responsive tech support. $10/year is an incredible deal; try them for yourself before trusting the one or two people that copy and paste the same single grievance every time someone mentions dh.

A friend had an account with dh and it was ok, but the downside was that you could only download at 1.5kbps or less (usually around 70kbps). Not sure if other sites had that problem on dh, but I was not impressed by that.

I spoke with one of the techs there becuase their server seemed unable to keep up with even moderate traffic (I hosted this site off a T1 for 6 months without incident) so I did a little checking and decided to have them check a few settings for me in their httpd.conf. Apparently the Maxclients directive is set to 250. Currently there appear to be 43 sites being run from the shared box that I'm on, makes availability pretty low... Good price if they could deliver, but at this rate I don't think I'll be physically able to use up my monthly transfer limit.

I think at this price people can afford to experiment, but I would hate to give someone the impression that this will be an acceptable option for a high traffic site. See my previous post about the maxclients directive. Additionally, this is the current load average on the server that they have me on load average: 16.32, 10.02, 8.50. On another note, their sales team is extremely quick to respond, usually less than an hour. It took 3 days to hear back about the maxclients issue, which I think is less than stelar as it only takes 5 minutes to look up.
