you would have to transfer the domain to a different DNS such as GoDaddy, Yahoo! or NameCheap. there should be a way for you to unlock the domain in Dreamhost and then you just start a transfer at one of the above mentioned services.

I haven't noticed my site being disabled yet, but the download speeds have just dived in the last couple of months. Used to be 400-500k, now I'm lucky if it goes above 100k.

I have been using them for almost 2 years & so far no real issues... about 1-3x a month I cant connect but its only for a few minutes & its back & running normally. i run a board for trance tunes & overall it seems reliable for the price. http://www.audiblefusion.com . I am up for renewal soon & I think I am going to stay with them... it can be a pain transfering sql databases from one server to another & yes their control panel kinda sucks but you get use to it & as for the email i dont use it for email I forward it to another email account so no problem there.

I use this for a small engineering company. For less than 10 bucks you get quite a good deal. However if you ask alot of your server this may not be for you. I have everyone set up on Outlook to check their email and everyday at least once..usually....they get the box that comes up that says that outlook can't connect to the server. Whether its Dreamhost or just our connection I cannot say for positive, however, everytime I have manually checked (even when the "can't connect" box is up) I HAVE been able too, so no real connection problems, just a small annoyance.

O, the only real thing I hate is that when you go in through the dreamhost panel to manage accounts...changing a pw takes like 4 or 5 hours to register sometimes. It's not instantaneous so tell your users to do it at the end of the day.

Their "one-click" installs are pretty cool. It makes setting up a website pretty slick. You do have to have a little background knowledge but that's all I have...a little. Try running Joomla to manage your website. Pretty slick. Anywho just thought I'd give some feedback.

But for 9.24 we got a free domain name and a year of hosting so we figured we'd give it a shot and if it didn't work we'd only be out 10 bucks. Most places are at least that for a month.

Also...they have a hard limit on per email sizes. 7 MB is the limit. That won't affect most people but some it may. ** per email message, there are no account limits but you can set them for differently for each individual**

I've had a Dreamhost account since late last summer, and I've been using it for my gallery (and various file hosting, at times). I have no real complaints - their MySQL servers seem a bit slow, but the newest version of Gallery 2 has speed increases that mostly make that irrelevant, plus it was only $10 for a year anyway.

Does anyone know if I could renew for a year at the same price with this? Or would I have to cancel my current account and have to register for a new one with the code, possibly with a different credit card? (I don't mind a few days of downtime, my site isn't mission critical or anything...)

Been using Dreamhost for about a year now and all in all they've been pretty good. If you're in california like me, you'll get really awesome speeds (I've downloaded HUGE (700mb) files when I'm on campus at 1.3MB p/s which is incredible!) Anyhow, the only thing I don't like about Dreamhost from my own experience is that they REALLY crack down on copyrighted materials. And I'm not talking about the normal stuff cuz all I do is host manga (the ones that are only available in Japan and only has a copyright in Japan) and they deleted ALL my files. But I guess other than that, no problems. =\

This hosting service is ONLY good for VERY basic pages, file storage.

Its a great deal for beginners or experimental websites but thats it. This is NOT a serious hosting service. Sure the specs seem amazing but what they dont tell you is that you get only a TINY TINY portion of the servers resources and if you cross them say bye bye to your website for 10-15mins.

I haven't had any of those problems I had a 300MB movie being downloaded about 100 times a day at one point. No problems and people were getting 1100 kbs or better.

would you mind putting up a large test download, just so we get an idea of data transfer rate?

try http://www.anonhost.net/100mb.bin, which is hosted on the netfirms deal. just curious to see whether they throttle and what not!

here you go buddy. http://sybert.net/100mb.bin

just for reference sake - i got about 600 k average d/l from your site. i got roughly 260k upload to my site and 300 k down. (i'm in atlanta and i believe dreamhost is in california).

i run a vbulletin forum, a picture site (gallery2), a cms (like phpnuke) and some basic file hosting. i have had less problems with dreamhost than i've had with other providers. and *much* better service. but then again, i've had better service from 1&1 than i had with those other providers as well.

i'm not on the 777 deal... i'm on their base shared plan if that makes any difference. what i like about them - the communication you receive from them. they send out newsletters. they have faqs. they have support forums. and the biggie for me....they email you directly if you have an issue *before* they shut down your site...your email...whatever. maybe that is becoming the norm, but that has not been my experience with other providers in the past.

in any case, i'm very happy with them....and with 1&1 (i got a free account awhile back and have enjoyed their service....and especially the price )
