I realize this a newbie-esque question, but any help would be greatly appreciated. I signed up for space with Telnap but can't figure out how to define my sight under FTP using Dreamweaver. Anyone know how to make this all work?

Never used any macromedia stuff, actually i rather despise it.

To ftp in windows, just go to your command window and type ftp. Then use open ip.address. This should bring up a username and login option. From there you can browse your directories (cd, dir, etc) on the ftp server and "get" and "put" stuff. Hopefully, this is sufficiently clear since we really NEED more flash based websites out there.

I love the FTP/RDS feature .. been using it since before Macromedia bought Allaire and took the idea from CFStudio. Saves a ton of time and effort.

Assuming you're using MX 2004 version, go to Site --> Manage Sites and you can define your FTP settings in there. After that's set up, you should see your defined FTP listing under the Files Panel.

I have Dreamweaver UltraDev4...I'm confused about the settings. I understand that for FTP host I type in ftp.(my domain name goes here).(com, net, ect.) It is the host directory aspect I am confused about. I'm not sure what to type in here. Telnap sent me an IP address...but what goes in host directory? I presume public_html but I keep getting this message: "An FTP error occurred - cannot make connection to host. The remote host cannot be found." Any idea on what I need to change, use, ect.? I'm very new to this all.

You don't need to put anything in the host directory. Just put in your IP address for the FTP host along with your username and password. You might have to uncheck "anonymous" to be able to enter your username/password.

I'm thinking you should put the provided IP instead of your hostname in the "FTP host" as well. When did this domain name go through for you ? Perhaps the domain name hasn't propogated yet and that is why they provide you an IP initially instead. Does the domain name work for you on the web ?

For the "host directory" (which wasn't your problem) - that is where you want to drop in as soon as you are connected. You can use public_html/ if you like.

Speaking of DW and FTP... I'm trying out MX 2004 (yay for 30 day trial!) and I'm having a bit of confusion. It allows for a "test" server which, for now at least, I'd like to be on the "live" server, but in a directory off to the side (for one, I'd like to try out PHP, but don't want to have to install it locally). I think I have it configured right, but I'm not getting the expected behavior. Suggestions?

sorry but I have no luck understanding your question at all. What don't you have configured right - the FTP connection itself ? What's this about a test server ? What is your expected behavior ?
