I can't provide too much help, since I've only used a dremel, but my suggestion is to look at the cost of the accessories for it when considering which one to buy. Lately I've cut a couple holes in my case, and I've gone through about 20 dremel reinforced cutting wheels so far, and they're about $11 CDN for a pack of 5.

I imagine either tool would work for any task one of them would work for, assuming the same accessories are available for each, so it's probably a question of cost and quality.

If you have a Lowes around you, they have the Dremel with 128 Piece Accessories almost half off.

I wanted to get a dremel once, but I had only $26. So I got Kmart's brand "benchtop", and it works very nice. I could vote for them!

I have a Dremel (the variable speed model) and have no complaints about it. The cost is always in the bits and accessories. I tend to break a lot of the attachments.

The Black and Decker is cheaper, but it only goes up to 30,000 rpm. The Dremel is the better brand, and it goes all the way up to 35,000 rpm. BTW, make sure you get the variable speed one so you can cut other stuff, like plastic, which requires a lower RPM.

I purchased the non variable dremel first. I did not like the non variable part, do yourself a favor and get the dremel with the varible speed option. The bits are interchangeable between the black and decker and the dremel. I recently cut out a good size window in an evercase and went through 3 cut off wheels. People just get too impatient and wreck the wheels while cutting.

The black and decker is not my favorite. The build quality is lesser than the dremel. Dremel also stocks parts for fixing dremels that have had lots of use on normal retail shelves and black and decker does not. However, black and decker is not that bad so it's kind of a toss up but I'd go the dremel route if I was you

Ya, my first thoughts were that I was being too rough with the wheels, but trying to be more gentle didn't lead to any improvement in the life of the wheels. It took me 6 wheels to cut a huge window in my full tower, and another 14 wheels to cut a design and some text into the right side panel. Nothing was too complicated, but as soon as the wheels start to grab in the metal, they seem to disappear quickly. It's definately possible that I just don't have the patience, but I was really trying to keep the number of wheels down for the right panel, and I didn't do that great a job, although the panel looks great.

On a related note... are the non-reinforced cutting wheels of any use? I notice they are quite a bit cheaper, and apparently will cut metal if you buy the right ones. All of the non-reinforced cutting wheels that came in my kit when I bought it were broke, so basically I got a bag full of little wheel chunks.
