Drilling holes in case to add a side fan

My brother removed a 120mm fan from a 300W PS I had, and I am considering adding it to the side of my case. I cleaned it up and saved the screws and grille, but it also has two loose wires. I have a PS extender with a two pin extension on that (purchased 'em from 3dfxcool awhile back). I am going to sever the 2-pin extension and connect the wires from the fan to the extension (red to red, black to black) and then plug this contraption to my PS.

My question is this: Where should I put this fan?!

I have a slot cooler under my AGP card blowing air out from there, and I also have a fan below my PS blowing air out (I have an Elan Vital T10X case, FYI). I also have a front fan sucking air into the case. Should I add this fan over my expansion cards (SBLive! & Intel Ethernet card), or should I put it over my CPU, thus sucking the air from the CPU fan out? I have a generic fan, but have an Alpha PAL6035 on order.

Thanks!

PS. I plan to do this with a Dremel power tool and will file any burrs off the case (after drilling).

If your brother took out a 120mm fan from your PS, make sure that it's getting cooled, or else it'll fry. Put the fan in the top-rear, sucking out air.

??

No, I have a power supply (Deer 300W AMD approved) with fan, a second fan below it sucking air out, a front case fan sucking air in, and a slot coolr under my AGP card, blowing the air from that card, out.

I just want to know whether I should put the fan that is out of an old PS above my CPU (so it'll suck the CPU air out), or over my expansion cards (blowing air either in or out).

Why are you even doing this?

4 fans in your case is more than enough, and will just add extra unwanted noise to your room. I myself only have the cpu fan, slot fan, and sparkle power supply/fan going; super quiet and cpu is running at 35c (800athlon classic).

just my $.02

PappaFixxx, obviously you haven't been lurking around these Forums enough.

If I were you, I would put the fan on the side of the case blowing at the CPU or AGP card, or I would put it on the top sucking air out.

Um.....I read these forums a lot. I HAVE been reading a lot because many people are so focused on adding fans, they don't realize how foolish it is sometimes. You can only cool so much, after a while, its just rediculous. I see all of these people putting 20 fans in their case; its just odd. Sure, it seems cool, but when you cant even hear yourself think when its running, you may want to think twice.

As for adequate cooling, it should only have to go as far as your heat goes. Of course, the athlons DO get hot, but not to the point where you need 50 fans in your case. There are just as many people concerned with cooling as there are with noise. I was just letting adding my opinion simply to imform him of the added noise...I wasn't telling him NOT to.

Anyways, good luck whatever you do.

This is just an idea, that is all. While my case isn't THAT loud (yet), I do admit it is becoming on the noisy side. However, I play my games and MP3's loud, so it drowns out the fans. The noise is still tolerable, either way (my case is located on a shelf under my desk).

I am not going to put it blowing onto my CPU. With the (soon to arrive) Alpha cooler, the two gusts of air hitting each other would be for not...not to mention it would disperse the heat inside my case. The fan on the AGP card is an idea - I only have the fan on the card to cool the GeForce chip. The card slot is to whisk away the air that blows out from the GeForce's fan. Wouldn't this fan help to create more air circulation? Since the front fan is the only way my case actually gets air (there are no side holes...only front ones), would adding it up and blowing out help to create a more efficient airflow? Not to mention trying to keep the myriad of cables out of the way...

And PappaFixx: Don't worry, I am considering your idea too. This is just an idea.

Thanks and I welcome more opinions.

what i did to my case since i like modifying things and such and since i dont see the one side of my case was make a modified side. It's basiclay a square with a few support bars with a screen across it. and it's all painted hunter green to blend in with the area. Since the side is off it stays cool and the only fans to keep it quite are the ps fan and the cpu fan.

Maybe if you were uhhhh, I dunno overclocking your cpu then maybe just maybe you would want more than just 4 fans. I only have 5 and if I had more room I would put more. I have a 92mm fan suckin air in from the font. PS fan. Gorb cooling the PIII. A 80mm fan connected to the top of the case blowing air out, and another 80mm fan on the top section of slide-cover blowing air on the cpu.
For your situation, I would put the fan at the bottom of slide-cover blowing air on your pci cards.
