Driver charged with killing niece

CONNELLSVILLE, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A man who ran over his 2-year-old niece while she was playing in her driveway was charged with homicide by vehicle, speeding and other counts, police said.

Greg Gibbs, 28, pulled into the driveway at a speed greater than necessary Wednesday evening and ran into Megan Shipley, police said.

Authorities said family members repeatedly had told Gibbs to slow down.

Gibbs, who has been living with Megan's family, was arraigned Thursday on homicide by vehicle, careless driving, reckless driving and speeding charges.

He was being held in the Fayette County jail. It was unclear if he had an attorney.

I never understood the mentality of some drivers. They would drive normally on the road, then all of a sudden they speed into their parking spot.

Statistically, most accidents occur on driveways and parking structures. Although most are minor, this one had a serious consequence. I don't feel any sympathy for the driver at all.

Criminal homicide implies intent or serious negligence. To which I ask, why was a 2 year-old playing in the driveway without proper supervision to ensure her safety, who was negligent for allowing that, and why aren't they being charged?

I'd rather everyone drove like him than constantly on their cell phones not even watching the road. That's why SUV's all have rear-view cameras nowadays, because cell phone abusing soccer moms were backing over the kids in the driveway. How many of them got slapped with criminal charges? Oh wait... they didn't. And they sued the automakers instead...

Yeah idiots who talk on cell phones while driving chap my ass as well. I'm sure few of them are charged as harshly as this fellow was.

It is my experience that among the people that I know, the ones who have always claimed to be such great drivers are the ones who have been in the most traffic accidents as well. I suppose it's because they feel the need to show off their madd skilz and drive dangerously.

I say respect the vehicle and never for a moment think that you are "totally" in control.

It is sad really. It seems like he is the type that turn really fast into a driveway and slams on the brake. The family already recognize this dangerous habit and asked him to slow down. Choose to not listen and this iswhat happen.

That has to be such a horrible thing to live with, I don't even know if there would be a punishment worse than that!

Reminds me of this girl I knew when I was younger, when she turned 16 and got her first car, she was backing out of the driveway and ran over her own dog and killed it! (I realize not really the same thing)

i don't know what state you live in, but peds > all. peds include little kinds on driveways. the dipshit drove faster than needed and plowed a little kid over. the "why was little kid on driveway" attitude doesn't fly. doesn't matter if the kid was playing in the garage, the sidewalk, the lawn, whatever. what matters is the guy drove to fast onto a 2 year old. end of story.

wtf ... it's not that kids cant play in the driveway. it's that a 2 year old was playing in a driveway unsupervised. a 2 year old. a 2 year old hardly knows anything. it is unnaceptable to let your 2 year old child outside to play in the driveway, which is obviously near a street, with no supervision.

Now we are assume she was unsupervised. The parent could very well sit on the porch watching her played and that asshole of an uncle still powl into her. All I know from the article is the family know he pulls into that driveway too fast and likely hurt someone. That's why they ask him to slow down.

I was the 2 year olds older brother I was playing with her in the driveway when our ‘uncle’ flew in and hit her out mom and family was on the porch talking. So we had adult supervision we didn’t have a big yard nor were we by any main roads so we always played ball in the driveway.

I'd be interested to know how big the driveway was....if it was just 2 parking spaces off a busy road, that's totally different than a big driveway in a residential neighborhood.
Either way, this whole thing is tragic and heartbreaking for everyone.
