I always let the application decide, I don't see the point in FORCING it off, no games enable it by default and most games have options to disable it anyways...

I have only ever seen two games that have it on automatically and don't have an obvious way (i.e. something in the options screen) to turn it off. There doesn't seem to be much point in forcing it off otherwise, as opposed to leaving it application controlled.

If you force it off, you're going to crop out the 'max' framerates for just about every modern card at most resolutions. It would still be interesting to see the results, as most users do disable vsync.

I don't know how some of you guys leave it on! The texture tearing drives me mad! The only time leaving it off has been bearable for me was when I ran my old CRT at 100+hz.

Doom 3 enables it by default (and perhaps even Quake 4 and whatever that new 'Quake' is).

vsync? what?(not kidding)

If someone could be so kind as to link to a decent article on vsync and why I should care to have it on or off, that would be great.

this is one of the most contentious topics in all of video

i'd go into detail, but i don't have the time right now :-(

I'm sure someone will start evangelizing you

personally, if I'm getting framerates over 30 fps very consistently i like vsync (and triple buffering if i have enough vram at the res+settings i'm running). otherwise i turn it off to try and increase performance a bit.

I usually leave Vsync on in any given game, and leave the control panel at (application-controlled).
If I am benchmarking, of course I turn it off in game. I have never turned Vsync "OFF" in the control panel.

The reason I force Vsync on is two fold

1) I hate tearing.

2) I prefer consistancy.

I am actually surprised at how few people turn it on. I know it is a personal preference and there is talk about input lag that went into a very, very long discussion, but even if input lag is true, it is something I would gladly trade for a smooth experience. Moving from 140 fps to 60 fps is very noticable in regards to fluidity. Capping it at 60 (or whatever the Hz of your monitor is) is desireable, IMO.

This reminds me, I would like to see results in a video review with Vsync turned on as well. I know that sounds like a very silly request, but I think the differences between a lot of these cards would come down to a few frames per second in many titles. Of course the test would not represent 'performance potential', but it would in fact be a great test in my opinion.

ive just been messing with Need for speed Most wanted with Vsync on and off.

NFS:MW Vsync on with TB = 60max fps and a lot of stuttering.

NFS:MW Vsync off = 90+ fps but with some tearing

But and heres the clincher turning Triple buffer on or off made no diffrence in the control panel and to get triple buffer working correctly you need to use DXTweaker.

NFS:MW Vsync on with TB and DXtweaker = 75max fps with no stuttering and game is smooth as silk.

All of the above were with 16xAF, 8xQAA, Muliti sample and max quality available ingame and in Nvidia's control panel.

ive not tried nHancer to enable triple buffer so i dont konw if it works using that or not.

Vsync off in every game. I'll take the smoothness of higher FPS versus the possibility of tearing any day.

Wow, this sounds like useful information. I am going to check that out when I get home from work.

Voted. I never force it off.

If I can get over 40fps with it enabled (in-game or force on in CP), I use it. I hate screen tearing! I think as framerates took a dive with DX10 era games, fewer people are using vsync. It's a luxury setting IMO. I'll always use it if I can get 40-60fps, and I can with everything except for the game I don't speak of..

I usually have it set to "let the app decide" since most games turn it off anyways.

Turn it on all the time then becasue if you cant get 40fps you might aswell not get 40fps without screen tearing.

Vsync brings down you max fps to 60fps so if your only getting 40-50 in a game then you might aswell turn it on because youll still get 40-50fps but without screen tearing.

With Triple buffer it brings that max of 60fps upto 75fps and also sorts out stuttering that can occur somtimes.

Voted No, Never and always have it Forced-On with Triple-Buffering Enabled to eliminate tearing. Been doing this for years, ever since I purchased my first LCD.

Unless I am mistaken, Triple Buffering doesn't move the fps from 60 to 75, that is determined by the vertical refresh rate (Hz) of your monitor. Triple Buffering fixes the problem of when the frames go lower than the refresh rate. iIt will not cut it down by a multiple of the refresh rate. In other words, without triple buffering a set of frames that could be rendered at 53fps would be chopped down to 40fps, and 37 would be chopped down to 30, etc... So you have 60/40/30, etc instead of 60/47/37 respectively, which is why it appears to 'stutter' but actually doesn't.

lol all i know is when i enable triple buffer my fix rate went from a max of 60 to 75 fps and eliminated the stuttering.

i know NFS MW is and old game but i cant believe the diffrence in performance and quality.

no slow downs and no stuttering at all even at 200 MPH........lol

Edit: the Dx overrider does work, its in the rivertuner folder in the tools folder if anyone cant find it.

You are right mate i just changed my refresh rate from 75hz to 60hz and that determined my max fps.

Thankyou
