Drivers: Don't always be so nice

Now I'm all for being a courteous driver but that ends when an a-hole driver is just trying to take advantage of a situation.

Ex, there's a stoplight that can get pretty busy in the morning and when it does it can back up to 3 or more blocks. On the right side there is a parking lot for businesses that goes all the way to the stoplight. The a-holes will cut into this lot at the very back, pass 20 or so cars and exit out at the last outlet, about 50 feet from the stoplight.

Even when other drivers see them do this it boggles my mind that they still let them in. Why?! You guys are just enabling their behavior cause they know they'll get away with it. If they don't get let in and end up waiting longer than waiting in line they won't try it anymore.

If I read you correctly, you are having difficulty dealing with road rage. Maybe listen to some softer music or play an audio book to calm you down during your commute. Either that or figure out how to let your boss agree to you telecommuting.

They didn't see the "a-holes" use the parking lot as a shortcut like you did. For all they know, the person is just trying to exit the lot. Who would cut someone off trying to get out of a parking lot in stop and go traffic? That would be the a hole move.

It is up to the police to observe and stop drivers from doing this, not you or anyone else.

On the street, if there's a line behind me I never let people in, regardless of where they came from. To be nice to that one person means I have to inconvenience everyone behind me. I'm actually being nicer by making that one guy wait. The needs of the many....

It is up to the police to observe and stop drivers from doing this, not you or anyone else.

Can the police even cite these drivers in a private lot? You could always make a call acting as the property owner asking for enforcement.

I get your point, same thing with people crossing through the gas station to make a right turn. It's not a douchey move per-se, but I could see how it could be dangerous to see cars speeding inside a private lot to exit in front of the line. I believe that's illegal in the drivers handbook (don't hold me against that) but the legality of whether someone is cutting or just trying to exit from a business is up to the cop to decide.

It's just as bad as the ass hats that take the exit lane on the freeway to bypass traffic just to try and squeeze in at the very end. Or the idiots that see traffic is backing up for an off ramp or exit and go all the way to the exit in normal lanes, then stop in the lane trying to take the exit.

And people seem to let them in. Stop it and make them plan ahead like the rest of the people.

On my daily commute, there's a traffic light that's still stuck with nothing more than a timer, and no loop detectors, so it can get a big clogged during rush hour. There's a private parking lot next to it, and people will often cut through that to bypass the intersection.

Sometimes there's a police car hiding behind the building though.

It warms me heart to see those flashing lights.

So here's thing thing about this situation. It's not about people being nice, it's about people taking advantage of society. In the adult world, something like cutting someone off or tailgating to prevent people from getting in a spot can easily lead to talking to the police and dealing with insurance if the situation is mild and a throwdown possibly involving weapons in more severe situations. In either case, you've wasted more time than simply letting a few drivers in.

Society is riddled with these issues. There will always be people who try to cut corners or break rules to benefit themselves while those who diligently follow the fair path are screwed in some way. Since these selfish folks are able to take advantage of the situation most of the time, this gene will never die out.

Best possible outcome is to accept the things that you can't change (such as other driver's actions) and focus on things that can be changed (either your route you take to work or your reaction to seeing the injustice of the shortcut).

Our brains were only evolved to live in a medium large society (150 people ish) [missing citation], so there will be a disconnect between what society is today vs what we perceive it should be. In this case, there can never be justice for such a large society of assholes, but in a 150 person society, these things can catch up quickly to a person. Me thinks that our world would be a bit more interesting if we were all living in 150 person tribes. Happiness probably rises but it challenges everything that we know about modern advances.

Or fewer. We're tribal primates running >100k year-old firmware and hardware, trying to wrestle concepts of millions or billions of people or things.
Not everyone handles it well.
