Driving a manual...

When you have to stop at like a red light or stop sign, do you just brake till you reach "stop" position, THEN shift down, or shift down while breaking and pushing the clutch or something?

Never driven a manual before, so sue me :/

you take it down to second gear and roll it, unless of course there is a cop within eyeshot or another car you must yield to

Just shift into neutral and brake until you stop.

The clutch pedal must be fully pushed in (or the tranny must be in neutral) before you come to a complete stop. Otherwise, the engine will stall. I find it easiest to put the engine in neutral as the car is slowing down and brake. You can do two things at once.

At red lights, I drop into first and then balance the gas and clutch. If its a long red light I will drop into neutral... If its a stop sign and no ones around, usually 2nd, then right back into 3rd

If I'm gonig to come to a complete stop:
Put the clutch in, brake to a stop, put the car in 1st, let out clutch and start gonig again.

If I'm jsut downshifting:
Put the clutch in, shift to the lower gear, give the car a little gas to try and match revs w/ the transmission, let the clutch out again.

Say I was in 5th gear on a '89 supra, I would hold the clutch in, shift down to 4th, 3rd, 2cd, then 1st, while holding the clutch in right? or do I simply go from 5th to 1st?

What if I have to come to a quick stop? what if I stop really quickly, while in 5th gear?

I hope you know how fast you are going if you are in 5th gear in a turbocharged supra....

Don: then just break, dont worry about downshifting in an emergency. Once you are stopped, just clutch into neutral. And I would NOT recommend going from 5th to first, you will rape your engine.

And to answer your question, if you want to slow down pretty slowly, yes downshift and keep in gear and go with traffic. But if you are going to a complete stop, you can go into neutral and once you're stopped, but it in 1st.

lol...you can downshift and let the gearing do some of the braking...plus it enables you say if the light were to change you would be in the right gear to start off again....or close to it

why dont you just get an old beater car thats a manual and try it out

pretty damn fast but lets just say I was... The point is, would I have to downshift through the gears, or just go straight to first? Or go straight to nuetral?

Your own preference. If stopping fast don't play with gears. Don't bother with engine breaking. This is real life, not a video game. Hit the brakes and leave it in neutral. When its time to start again put it in 1st then.

just put it back in neutral or shift it to first or second incase u need to manuver your car to avoid hitting someone.

So basically, when braking, and going from 5th gear to stop, just switch immediatly to nuetral and it wont harm the engine? Lets say I was stopping for a stop sign, normal conditions.

Pushing in the clutch is the same as if the car was in neutral. What you should do is just put it in neutral, coast to the sign. Once you're stopped, pop it into 1st and get on your way.

To really understand it you have to drive. Watch somebody first.

If you dont know how to drive one, and have yet to do it, you will have PLENTY of other things on your mind when you are coming up to your first few stops. Just practice, and do whatever works best for you.

Ok after the stop, shift back into neutarl.
On starting: Yes, but when you gear to first, you must release the clutch and press the gas at the same time, slowly, so as not to stall the engine, just pulling the clutch out will stall it.

It's something that cant be taught on the internet, you actually need to try it.

Not in my car though.... plus the clutch in my car isn't what I'd call &quot;beginner friendly&quot; anyway....
