If I were you Get it into 5th doin about 65 -70 And start droppin gear without usin the clutch or brake...an if you hear a grindin noise that means you not tryin hard enough to get it into gear.So pull back and jam forward harder, and always be sure to have your foot on the gas.If you follow my advice then I wont have to worry about your inability to drive stick, and one less idiot on the road is one less person I have to worry about slammin into the back of me cause the dont know how to use their breaks.Nuthin personal I just enjoy being filled with road rage.

I'm relatively new to driving a manual.

If it is a pretty quick stop, I just put the clutch in, and and hit the brakes, and put it in first afterwards.

If I have plenty of time to slow down, I will downshift. I pretty much never row through all the gears. Maybe just 5-3, or 6-3, or 5-3-2.. depending on how quickly I'm slowing down.

And if you get a manual, I'd recommend many hours in an empty parking lot practicing starting from a stop. When in doubt, put the clutch in.

Ok, at the very least here's what i do.

Say i'm doing 40mph and need to stop at a stop light (complete stop) I press the brakes. Once i feel that the revolutions are too low to keep the engine in synch i press on the clutch until i'm at a complete stop.

I then shift to neutral and apply parking brakes (e.g. if it's a long stop like if a train passes by).

If i can get it in time i would also downshift until i get to a complete stop but if it has to be a quick (read: brake!!!) then i just do as i wrote above.

The reason i don't put it in neutral right away is because the engine while in gear can also help stop the car.

Oh btw, if you search on google you'll find a lot of information about this. Here's one site that should give you a primer on how to drive a car with a manual transmission --> click here.

As a couple here have noted, this is something that can't be taught on the internet. You just have to do it to know it. When i started everyone just told me how to do it. It was only when i actually started driving a standard shift that i "felt" how to use it.

When driving a car it's not just about "knowing" how to use the shift, it's also about "feeling" the engine and the car.
