My mind is made up, I'm taking my laptop with me and unlocking at the mall. Someone convince me not to buy it 2nite. I've been drooling over it since I first saw its photos. Poll attached!

I couldn't care less about convincing people to purchase phones. But, I'd love to convince people to post in the correct forum: Gadgets gear and PHONES - Anandtech Moderator DrPizza

BTW thanks Anandtech mod - sorry about that

(Update 1)
Its up and working! Full unlock took 7 mins (bought two iPhones one for me, one for my brother, both unlocked without any trouble! Pics up shortly

Seriously, don't do it. Some of the features are only supported by AT&T at this point, so you'll be able to use it, but just barely.

Also, if you have ANY problems and contact Apple for the warranty, they'll realize you unlocked it and you'll be out $400USD. Just wait for Rogers to get it this fall and sign up then.

BTW the amount of data it uses is just disgusting. Sitting on a table doing nothing it's accessing the network. If you setup the data portion of it with Rogers settings, you'll have overage like you wouldn't believe, since Rogers only goes up to like 10MB or something on their crappy data plans.

Not worth it, get a nice new ipod touch instead.

60 dollars a month is a rip. Plus do you get the free internet everywhere in Canada? (I thought you didn't...)

60 a month for what? You're paying the standard 40 for the voice plan, like always, 20 a month for unlimited data and 200 messages. That's pretty decent considering I've seen bills with over 800MB of data downloads in a month on those things.

Up here in Canadia we don't have unlimited data plans, and 10MB plans through Rogers cost a crapload. It's ridiculous, and I have no idea how they'll handle the data hungry iphone this Christmas when it comes out here.

I love mine. Even if you don't have a data plan at all, the WiFi works well. I'd definitely recommend them. Surfing the web is very readable, they are good for watching movies, google maps is handy when travelling, the calendar is nicely done, and of course, you don't need to carry both an iPod and a cellphone around.

pm: The iPod Touch also has wifi.

op: I would second on the iPod touch. You get most of the cool features of the iPhone without the expensive service and data contracts. There are much better smart phones for the money than the iPhone. You also have to consider that Apple at any time could issue an update that locks the phone again and makes it even harder to unlock. You are taking a big risk of buying an expensive paper weight if that happens.

lot's of incorrect facts in your posts. first, the only AT&T only feature is Visual Voicemail which you can live without. second, it is not illegal to unlock your iPhone and apple can do nothing about it. the DMCA clearly states that it is legal to unlock your own phone as long as it is for private use.

the warrenty is only void if you open the iphone to do a hardware unlock which is stupid. the iphone dev team has a free tool that does the same thing.

It is not illegal to unlock the phone. But the law also does not say the service provider or the manufacturer is obligated to unlock the device either.

You are absolutely wrong on Apple being unable to do anything about it. They have an exclusive contract with AT$T. Apple shares the revenue from the service contracts with AT$T. Apple can issue an update to the iPhone tomorrow that locks the phone again and renders the unlocking software useless. The only way you possibly might get around this is by turning off the updating feature of the phone. Then again, Apple probably has the capability (just as Microsoft does) of doing a stealth update of the phone.

One other thing. The iPhone dev team may have a free tool to unlock the phone, but Apple is not releasing that software to the public. All the software available on the internet is third party software. If Apple discovers one of it's devs actually created/released that tool, I doubt that employee will have a job at Apple very long.

Bah, the only "feature" you lose is Visual Voicemail. I think 99.9% can live without that.

There's an easy fix to restore YouTube functionality.

Buy an unlocked one without a service contract from eBay, lots less headaches, and the prices have come down nicely.

you don't understand. what i mean, is that they can't sue you for doing this. they may update the OS so that it is relocked, but from what I've read, the unlock has survived OS updates cause it deals with writing code to the broadband chip or something like that.

and as for the exclusive contract, i think you misunderstood it. this is probably exactly what Steve jobs wants. the unlocking of the iphone guarantees apple much more sales which they get a lot more money out of then the mere contract with AT&T.

exactly. If anything, apple loves unlocked phones because they = more people buying them. The only people concerned with unlocking are ATT because they lose customers.
