If looking at it that way, all electronics are a waste of money. So would be a car, furniture, clothing and all appliances.

The value of these things are not what they will be worth in a few years down the road. It is in if they satisfy a desire/need. The iPhone is not a waste of money if it does precisely what you want it to do.

My iPhone is most definitely the coolest thing that I've bought in quite a while. I have a friend who works for Apple, so I paid $254 for it. I wonder how many people who are saying it sucks have spent any time playing with one.

I definitely wasn't too impressed when I heard about it - but back when they first came out I thought iPods weren't as impressive as the Samsung MP3 that I had at the time too. But once I used the iPhone for a while, I was pretty impressed. And I keep finding more neat things about it. It's just nice to have a very readable, handheld HTML (not WAP) web-browser in my pocket. My daughter and I were talking about the Civil War over lunch and I couldn't remember some details - I got out my iPhone, hit Safari, flipped it sideways to make it easier to read and we scrolled through the Wikipedia entry.

I don't get excited about all things Apple - in fact, this iPhone is the first thing from Apple that I've ever bought (I won my iPod) - but they did a good job with it. Yes, 3G would be nice. Yes, better flash browser support would help. But the battery is user-changeable (it's just hard to change), and I think the keyboard on it - particularly when it's flipped sideways (for web-browsing) is actually pretty good. My complaints are the size (it's too big for me to sit down with it in my back pocket), the battery life (it's about 5 days, but I use WiFi a lot), the lack of flash support (a lot of pages don't work), the audio quality out of the microphone on the phone isn't great, and the weight - it's heavy even for it's size.

I promptly unlocked it when I bought it and I'm using our $70/month unlimited data plan for both my wife and I ($50 family plan + $20 unlimited data plan + T-Mobile WiFi). Much better deal than AT&T offers. The guys at the T-Mobile store thought it was pretty cool.

so what is the iphone going to do if you don't have a data plan at all on the cellular plan you intend to use it with?

Like, my cell phone can send text messages... but i can't get on the internet or anything with it. Is that going to screw up the iphone? I'm really just looking to use the internet in wi-fi mode. Is there a setting i can set to make sure this is all it tries to use?

Just use it in WiFi-only mode. You still get a cell phone, and a video ipod, with a camera and a wifi web browser all in one small package. And you can sync your email and calendar to it as well.

I had mine in Wifi-only mode for a week - it works fine.

60 dollars a month is a rip. Plus do you get the free internet everywhere in Canada? (I thought you didn't...)

60 a month for what? You're paying the standard 40 for the voice plan, like always, 20 a month for unlimited data and 200 messages. That's pretty decent considering I've seen bills with over 800MB of data downloads in a month on those things.

Up here in Canadia we don't have unlimited data plans, and 10MB plans through Rogers cost a crapload. It's ridiculous, and I have no idea how they'll handle the data hungry iphone this Christmas when it comes out here.

I work in cellular retail and believe me its not coming out here any time soon...

Retail is generally the last to know about such things. We've been told that Rogers is going to have it later this year for Christmas, or early next year at the latest. The only thing holding them up is the data features at the moment, once they figure out the plans they'll likely announce it.

Also, I never said it was illegal to unlock a phone, I said it would likely void the warranty. Most manufacturers don't care what carrier you use the phone on, but it's also a gigantic hassle to get the manufacturer to deal with their phone. You have to send it back to them, you don't get a replacement in the meantime, and a repair might take weeks. That's why the carriers do replacements with cross-shipping for warranty issues. Try taking the iPhone into a AT&T store and getting them to deal with the warranty on it, won't happen. The Apple store won't even touch it if they find out you've modified the coding on the chips and unlocked it, you'll simply be told to buy another one.
