I'm so sick of hearing, "Driving is a privilege." I'm sorry, but until they stop charging me taxes to pay for roads, cops, lights, etc etc etc, then it's my friggin right.

Now, just like prison for breaking the law, you can lose your right to drive as well.

I just feel the distinction should be made. Quit trying to make me feel like the gubment is doing me a friggin favor for letting me drive on THEIR roads.

in the broad aspect of universal rights (civil, voting, property) I don't see a car. if a car was a right, it would be provided free of charge and everyone everywhere would get one automatically. it's obvious you don't know what a right truely is (this transcends the idea of government institution or social laws) if you honestly believe that everone in the world is entitled to a car at age of maturity...

Priviledge. A man was recently caught in my city driving at 120km/h with no arms. He has never held a drivers license (was born with no arms) but has been driving for years. An asshole like that shouldn't be allowed on the road. Yeah it sucks that he is disabled but he is putting other peoples lives at risk. Even worse, he was driving with 3 other passengers, one of whom had a full drivers license. Irresponsible.

It's a privilege. That's why people get their licenses taken away. If they can't make smart choices while driving, they shouldn't have the privilege to drive. It's that simple.

Motor vehicles have the potential to be very dangerous (to the operator along with others), and thus their use should be regulated (as it is.)

Unfortunately these days people miscontrue everything to be a right when in actuality there are very few true rights. Most things in society are privileges.

Freedom of travel is a right. The exact mode of travel, however, is not specified. As one could take a train or plane, or ride a bus, or be a passenger in a car, or just plain walk, your right to freedom of travel is not infringed if you are prevented from actually driving a car. Therefore, driving is a privilege.

It is a privilege. You have to right to "pursuit of happiness", freedom of speech/assembly/attend your church, etc. but not drive a car. You have to earn it <get a license, pay for car insurance>.

You said ****charging me taxes to pay for roads, cops, lights, etc etc etc****. That's price you pay for living in a civil society. I don't like to pay anymore than the next guy but all those items cost money.

Privilege. You pay taxes for roads because you benefit from roads regardless of whether you drive or not. It helps food get delivered to your local market, mail to your mailbox and you to a hospital (if it ever came to that).

..and furthermore..why do I have to pay registration year after year if I don't sell/change title on the vehicle?? Registration fees should only apply if the title is changing. Not for the sake of revenue. And only the actual admin.fee of registration should apply. Not a whole slew of parasitic state and local charges.

Privilege for sure. I wish the driving test was harder, people should actually know how to operate a vehicle safely before they get behind the wheel.

Interesting question. I was going to say privilege, but after the comment was made about me paying taxes that go into public roads, I had to rethink for a moment. Driving on public roads would be a privilege, but driving on property that you own would be a right.

Of course, if you can only drive on your own land, whats the point? Drive the tractor around the field, I suppose.

privilege. easy. public transportation is hella cheap. no one ever said you had to drive. there are several ways to get from point A to point B. people have to earn the ability to drive if they want to commute by themselves. therefore, its a privelege. taking one's privelage to drive can still bring them to any destination. then again, it's a lot of "studying time" at the bus stop (for us students).
