What are some self made rules/patterns you have?

I never change lanes into the area between someone's blind spot and the front of his car.
unless its unavoidable.

If traffic in the left lane slows down for no reason, i wait a few seconds
before i overtake. (got my only ticket for overtaking when traffic slowed down due to a cop, and i didn't see him)

if more than 3 cars overtake me in a short while (say 30s) i change into the 2nd left most lane.

Nithin.

You don't move over from the left-most lane until 3 cars pass you? You should never drive on the left-most lane unless you are passing someone...

ya that normally doesn't happen. i'm usually going at the speed that traffic is moving.

i got my ticket at 81mph so i don't go above 80 now. unless traffic is going at that speed.

Slow people in the left lane is my biggest pet peeve, if your not passing someone get over. Other than that if you want to ride in my car you have to wear a seatbelt and I try to limit going WOT from stoplights to once per trip lol

You still shouldn't drive on the left-most lane... Someone might need to go faster than the speed traffic is moving, and need to pass you...

so pass me. like i said if you're just one person you can pass me. if i'm going too slow and holding up traffic and serveral people, then i move over. its not like i'm going at 65. i cruise at 80.

On a 2-lane highway, traffic is going at 70mph, you are on the left lane going at that speed while there are cars on the right lane doing the same...

I need to get somewhere and need to go over that speed... I come up behind you on the left lane, will you move over? If not, how can I pass you (except on the shoulder which would put everyone in danger)?

I'll drive in the center lane, unless I come up on a slowpoke. Then I pass them on the left. Wait till there's a good gap between me and slowpoke, then move back into the center lane.

If center lane is clogged with slowpokes, move to left. If I come up on slowpoke hogging left lane with no intention of moving, I wait till I'm clear, the I'll pass on the right.

Assholes who fly up a merge lane on the right to overcome stopped traffic and cut in at the last second NEVER get let in. I pull up till I'm a few inches away from the car in front. Let those dicks wait their turn like everyone else.

I drive pretty defensively. When making a left-turn, I always look beyond the car I'm turning infront of and if there's a bigger break behind them, I'll just take that instead of risking pulling quickly infront of them even though I know I can make it.

I'm guilty of riding in the left lane most of the time on the highway, but move over if people come up behind me.

On a two-lane road with side streets, if you are a vehicle in the left lane of the two-lane road, DO NOT get into the right lane just to go ahead of people.. there could be people getting on from the side street and you are 1) fvcking them over when they had the lane free and 2) going to get slowed down by slow traffic in the right-lane anyway.

oh yes of course. i don't hold up traffic. i was talking about the case where you have room to pass.

Stop at red lights, usually.

That is about it for Chicago.

The left lane has a name...it's called the passing lane. Guess where you shouldn't be unless you're passing a car? I hate people like you. Going the same speed as traffic is no justification to be in that lane unless you're passing. As soon as you've passed the intended car(s), get back into the travel lane until you come upon another car you need to pass. Rinse and repeat as needed.

OK, consider another situation similar to the one I listed above... However this time I have room to pass you on the right, but there are cars both in front and behind you driving on the right lane...

Don't you think it's safer for everyone if you would move over to the right and let me pass on the left, rather than me having to:
1) Move to the right lane in front of the car behind you
2) Pass you on the right
3) Move to the left lane in front of you to pass the other car on the right

???

No seatbelt, no ride. Won't move without everyone buckled up.

I generally try not to follow too closely at any speed, even slow ones (unless I'm tailgating a bit, and even then I don't get close, I let flashing my lights get my point across), because I've seen what can happen when you hit a patch of ice while trying to brake.

Probably some others I can't even think of that I subconsciously follow.

try to stick around 5mph over the speed limit. most of the time 3-4 over, I'm not sure exactly how accurate my speedo is.
drive in the rightmost lane all the time, only move out if I need to pass.
dead stop at all stop signs, no right at redlights.

cops are fvcking anal here. if we got rid of taxes, the state wouldn't even take a hit.

I try not to crash into hard objects. But sometimes you have to run over an old lady or two... life throws an obstacle in your path from time to time.

true. and i've not been in such a situation but i think i would move over. my OP was written with the 101 in mind. u know 4-5 lanes. and when i say room to pass, i mean the 2nd lane has few cars as well. not packed. when there is lot of traffic, i go with the flow.

Never ride in the left lane, ONLY to pass. If i'm on a highway and someone is in the left lane going slow I will flash my brights once or twice. If they don't move, I get on the horn. If they still don't move I'll pass on the right while giving them the finger.

Glad to hear you would move over in that situation. The highway I drive on regularly (I-5) only has 2-3 lanes, and people always drive on the left and don't move over when I need to pass...

Becareful with that, I got a ticket once for flashing my brights in that situation, cop said it was 'improper use of high beams'
