From the guy who did the root:

DO NOT REMOVE BACKUPASSISTANTCLIENT if you do, get it back on there NOW! a factory reset will result in a near brick.

just got my X... I've never had 3G until now... when I activated and started playing with it, it was showing 1X and a weak signal.. I was still able to sign into gmail and facebook and it even got my contacts. I called tech support and they did a full reset - when that came up, it showed 3G for the first time and 3 bars. Soon after I hung up, it went back to 1X. I powered it off normally and back on, showed 3G for a few secs, then back to 1X. Browser isn't loading jack. Wifi is not on - nor do I want it to be at this point. What's the deal here?

EDIT>> tech support has me downloading the system updates as we speak - it's staying on 3G for now... btw, my 100% battery is now at 50% after just over 1hr.

This concerns me, as I'm strongly considering this phone. The one I played with at the verizon store displayed 3g throughout browsing/downloads, etc, so I'm curious to know if the updates (when done) fix your issue.

^ not fixed after system updates... even had me zero-out my old phone to make sure it wasn't a conflict. I tried *228 to activate again and while it shows the activate screen it's not saying anything nor can I hit option 1 (or 2 to update roaming). He has to do more research on this and get back to me...

wifi and regular phone calls are working though... it's just a 3G issue.

Sounds like it could possibly be a defective device? Mine stays in 3G all the time and gets excellent reception.

thanks for the update. I'll keep checking the thread. There haven't been widespread reported issues like the one you described so might be an individual problem; hopefully it'll be resolved quickly.

damn that's annoying. I haven't seen anything about it happening to others, might have gotten a defective 3g modem in your phone.

can anyone tell me what their signal strength is under About Phone? Mine is hovering between -96dBm and -99dBM with 0 asu.

BTW, my battery is now down to 20% and the device has been very warm the whole time.

Did you have a VZW phone before this? Did it have an okay signal?

Be careful about what you remove. Apparently if you remove the backup assistant app and try to do a factory reset afterwards, your phone will be bricked.

Yeah, just renaming them for now. Tired of seeing Skype, Amazon MP3, etc, hogging memory when I never launched them and closed them 100 times.

So much crap on it, it's at 75%+ RAM in use idle, and when you go to launch something that requires lots of RAM like watch a 854x480 movie, it starts out choppy as Android has to kill all that crap and free up memory.

^unusedy Ram is wasted ram in Linux

but I never heard about the choppyness issue

The more ram free the less the kernel has to kick in to kill stuff at the last possible second when there is a sudden demand. I'm already noticing much snappier response, esp with large media, from the 100mb or so of ram freed up from crap that auto launches as soon a it's killed.

yes, it was always fine and never got dropped.

right now it appears 3G is staying on when I'm out and about, including just outside in the driveway... it seems there's just dead spots inside the house for 3G. Where I am now (on this PC) is 3 feet away from the window and the phone is going between 1X and 3G. If I sit 1 foot away from the window, it will stay 3G for the most part. I turned off my wireless on this PC in case it interfered and it didn't help. Battery has dropped 30% in an hour mostly browsing the web (no video) outside w/ 3G... and the manager says it's 90% from the display (even with low brightness set).

The other thing, it's really hot in the back down toward the bottom, even while in 3G while on the road (my wife was browsing)... she deals with blackberries all day and she said this is definitely not normal heat. Of course it cools down while not in use but still on (standby). I think I'm going to hit the VZW store and see what they have to say. But would they have new Xs in stock for me?...

I'd like to know how the 3G signal is different that I'm not getting that but getting the 1X just fine. Same cell tower no?

The phone does get warm. DX is not a blackberry, and yes, it will feel very warm compared to a blackberry. This is normal. I support blackberries all day for a living, trust me its not an apples to apples comparison.

There's a 100MB of bloatware on that phone? Good grief, Moto, did you flush your brains down the toilet? You hit one out of the park with the Droid 1, and now you're acting like the retard at the Special Olympics swinging at the T-Ball stand.

Funny you should mention Colorado and plane...

I ripped and encoded Avatar at 1 gb h.264 .mp4 and most media players can play it, but Rockplayer is so far the only media player I've found that has a stretch function that correctly handles 720x480 to 854x480 anamorphic stretch.

Seems the minimum ram for even the most basic process is around 10 mb on Android so 10 apps running or cached inactive = 100mb. Things like amazon mp3 that keep auto loading, the stock browser that keeps getting cached, etc.

Went to the local Verizon store and they said the Droid X was sold out. Not a big deal because I can't get a new phone until August 2nd.
