UPDATE with my 3G issue... they reactivated my old XV6800 which would say "EV" in place of 3G. With EV it only shows 1 bar max so they're thinking it's an in-home issue which pretty much fits with what I found. Doesn't make sense though being just 3ft away from the window... vs just outside getting a strong signal. And how come I haven't heard of anyone getting a weak/useless 3G signal in their home... this house isn't special and I'm not out in the boonies or anything.

So the X is going back, until I move some time late in the year. Oh well... will try it again then.

Seems the minimum ram for even the most basic process is around 10 mb on Android so 10 apps running or cached inactive = 100mb. Things like amazon mp3 that keep auto loading, the stock browser that keeps getting cached, etc.

Each app has it's own separate Java VM, so this is most likely most of this overhead.

having dead spots in a house is common. There are certain places in my apt where I get low signal and a few feet away I get full bars.

What's up with the droid x shortage? Can't find this phone in stock anywhere. Some places say ships in 4-6 weeks? 4-6 weeks???? NEIN.

ugh... not what I think a data plan is worth if it can be flaky... living room, bedroom, computer area (3ft from the window)... all bad. What's frustrating is it comes on 3G with 3 bars then the next second, gone. I was all excited to jump into this 3G thing - internet anywhere, download all kinds of apps... but it turns out my wifi is more dependable... and it's coming through the ceiling, not even *ahem* through the unobstructed window 3ft from here.

wow really? I've been holding mine like that since I got it and I've never seen that hahaha. Someone else did a review and said the X was the most able to cope with interference due to it's multiple antenna array. The only places I've had trouble are were from Verizon's lack of coverage and it only affected 3g data (google maps lagging, etc)

Yea I agree it can be a pain, I just set my phone to use wifi when I'm at home but I understand it is frustrating/not worth the aggravation.

yea I saw that as well, it does seem a little childish that Apple is now attacking all the other phone manufacturers. Also who the hell holds their X that way, his damn hand is wrapped all over the thing. IIRC the iPhone4 issue was bad enough that touching it with a finger could cause problems, not just the "Grip of Death"

but it doesn't matter that the X has issues, cause "people don't want a big phone" remember?

I'm still trying to figure out why there isn't a 3G symbol on the notification bar next to the signal bars. Is it not there on the X like all the others? Shouldn't it at least say 1x or 3G, my droid has never just been bars.

That signal change happens to me in my small apartment and I'm only like a mile from the tower. But in the 'living' room the signal would be going through most of the building and a metal roof, still I retain at the minimum 1 bar signal. Never really seems to effect any usage of the phone either. Try downloading 'real signal' to see what kind of db rating you are getting and what it does when you go outside. Possible you just have a flaky phone. I may only get 1 bar of 3g in parts of my moms house(she typically only gets 1 bar all over, htc eris) but I rarely lose the signal and with her much worse antennae never has a problem, and she lives in the middle of nowhere.

My droid has done that in spotty areas. Typically only see that when its on the border of going into and out of service.

edit: just looked closely at those pictures, yeah that's weird.

since i have 30 days anyway, I decided to keep the X a bit longer and play with it... 3G signal is still just as bad so I've switched wifi on and off when needed.

How long does your full charge typically last?

My battery reached 107F at one point after playing around less than an hour... is that bad? I told you it was hot.

Anyone? I was able to get about 20hrs between charges with minimal usage... maybe about 3 full hours it was actually on and being used. It's saying about 44% of it was display and 34% phone standby.

About a day, with streaming Pandora on the way to/from work, a few calls through the day, some internet browsing at lunch, etc. I've not had it die on me before getting home, but it is starting to look pretty low in the afternoon with moderate use.

I left it off a charger just sitting over night for about 10 hours to see what it would do and it was at the 90% mark.

i just shut all my gps tracking constantly running apps down and went barebones. just the usual browsing, phone calls, texts and email app running. and went 41 hours on 1 charge. and it was at 20% when i put it in the charger.

now, that is not how i normally use the device. under normal usage i seem to be getting 24 to 30 hours.

Think I'm going to keep this one until the end of the year at least. The Galaxy S seems nice but I just don't like Samsung phones enough to waste my time. The CyanogenMod team is working on some ROMs for the series though so that might help some of the complaints on the software side. Hardware side though... eh...

Keeping the Droid X. The Evo and Incredible are downgrades, and the only real tangible thing the Galaxy S has going for it is the GPU. The kind of gaming the GPU will make a difference on isn't viable anyway due to battery life, and what's the point, something better than both will be out in a couple months.

Launcher Pro + Dolphin Browser + rooted with bloatware removed = bliss. And Froyo is supposed to be that much faster? This thing is so much faster than my work loaner laptop and hotel wifi it's not even funny... in fact the only time I've pulled my laptop out of the bag was to root the X.

This is my first smart phone, I probably won't be looking at anything else until it has dual core, LTE, 1080p 4.3" screen, etc. And I will be looking for something the size and form factor of the X, it's perfect IMO. A little unwieldy in the pocket at times, but makes up for it being 100% useable and comfortable when it's OUT of the pocket and in your hands and under your eyes. I'd have to be double jointed or chop the first digit of my fingers off to use an Incredible or iPhone for hours on end.
