The original droid had one of the best battery lifes of all of the smartphones, and still does. That same amount on a 4.3" screen is fine with me, as the EVO's struggles.. Things are looking good. CM6 will be out soon, and I'm sure he'll add the X to his list of phones to have cyanogen on.

So, should I sell my Nexus One (and the slow to do anything worth while, T-Mo) and go with the new top dog. and Verizon. Cuz Verizon is not joking around with Android. They plan to stay at the top i think

You have to take into consideration that Verizon plans are a lot more expensive than T-Mo. If that doesn't bother you then go for it.

Not really. Verizon has a 450 minute plan for $39.99 plus $29.99 for unlimited. (better lock that in before it's gone) So $69.99 for ulimited everything but minutes. and I don't need that many minutes anyways, and use VoIP)

Verizon is actually only slightly more than T-Mobile. and my plan actually will go down a little if I move to what i mentioned above. Not only that but verizon is faster, and has much better service basically everywhere over T-Mobile..

What I'm wondering is, will Verizon need to release 4G phones like the EVO, or will there network just support it. and phones like the X can take advantage of it?

They charge a ridiculous amount for txts--$20 for 5000--so you'll have to go with Google Voice for txts if you want that price.

No, there are $5, $10, $20 text plans on top of the data fee.

I find txt charges to be infuriating. They're, literally. the cheapest thing for carriers to transmit, but they charge you extra for them. They should just be outlawed.

Agreed. They fact that a majority of people now text more than talk just means the phone companies will keep the text rates right where they're at since people will pay.

^ +1 its bytes of info, it should be tagged along with data plans. if you send out 500 messages of 160 bytes, thats only 78.125 kilobytes. VZW charges 50 cents per megs overage on data plans, they should charge that on texting plans... not .10 cents per message.

Some tidbits from Engadget:

* It's built of basically the same material as the Droid, but there's something almost kind of "taut" about the phone, where when you thwack it with a finger it resounds like a drum. The phone vibration seems to work on this same principle, giving it much less of the typical buzz (in the funky, cheap sense) you expect.
* There are three mics, and in video mode you can select between "scenes" based on which mic you want to use: outward facing for regular shoots, inward facing for narration. The third mic is up top for noise cancellation during calls.
* Yeah, there's not kickstand, but the EVO 4G really does seem chunky up against the Droid X, and the camera bulge on the latter is not annoying at all.
* PHYSICAL BUTTONS.
* You get your choice between Swype and Motorola's multitouch keyboard, which is really pretty great. We were typing at speed within a few seconds of using it.
* You can tell that the processor is fast, but the UI still has a jerky quality to it -- it's not totally fluid. We'd say that's more of an Android thing, though.
* The new version of Motoblur is much, much more attractive than before -- the widgets are sleeker, smaller, and less in your face. You can also resize them, and they rearrange themselves somewhat intelligently.

This new Motoblur sounds interesting. I'd still rather root but sometimes it's nice to just use the phone as-is.

Ok, many questions about the Droid X answered, but now, my only questions are:

WHEN WILL THE DROID 2 BE ANNOUNCED AND RELEASED???

20 dollar add on for unlimited at vzw last time i checked... and if you have the national family plan its included.

Apparently there's a rumor stating the Droid X has already been rooted. Guess we'll see soon if it's true or not.

Yeah that's why I'm still skeptical. Guess we'll see something soon.

posted on another forum

If it is a test unit I wouldn't be surprised, and actual released unit will be a whole different ball of wax. test units have root access via ADB as they run test-key software. However that is not the case on production units, plus from what I'm told the bootloader is now locked on the X.

Only time will tell tho once they hit the street. Even at that root isn't the biggest thing, we need to be able to flash a different recovery to it so we can mess with custom ROMs and so forth. so just having root is not the key but is a good start that is for sure.

So we need to wait and see until the phone actually comes out to see if its really rooted.

I remember reading something on the motorola forums a while ago that suggested they were looking into locking their phones down tighter since they weren't too happy with people hacking the Droid.

Motoblur doesn't look that bad on the X but custom ROMs and early Android 2.2 would be nice.

If I understand it correctly, having an engineering phone is what you want because the rom/files on that phone give you access to the system. The way the EVO root worked is by tricking the phone thinking you are flashing a legit rom but you were really flashing an engineering rom. Once you have access, you can just flash a proper recovery image to the system which will give you permanent access, then do what you want.

Thats one thing I can't stand about ATT and Verizon.
You need to get the $20 text plan even as a medium user.
Its $10 more with Tmobile and Sprint.

I'm getting this phone as soon as it's up for preorder. There's no way I'm not going to buy it. I'm so damn excited.
