Drop in CPU

I have had numerous BSOD and have managed to find out how to stop it.
But not happy with my result, so I was after some guidance where to go from here.

XP pro O/S
3200XP
Abit Mobo
1gig Twinmoss
No PCI
Ti4200 AGP

When I drop the CPU and FSB to default with a CMOS clear it runs at 1090Mhz

At this speed the machine no longer BSOD.

Not overclocked - haven't bothered with that for a couple of years.

CPU temps are fine 45 C
Mobo temps are fine 39 C

Why should this be?
Chip is only a month old.

My reboots / BSOD are not due to worm or virus, as I have checked this and anyway it wouldn't have been OK since lowering CPU

Appreciate some way forward without buying new items.

Thanks

your mb temp is realy high!! shouldn't be muh more than 30C at the max

what type of case do you have an what fans do you have...

also sounds like it may be a powersupply isue what type do you have? with your setup I would have at least a 350watt good quality PSU (not a cheapy one).

what is your vdimm and vcore set to ??
and also what are they reading as ?

sometimes they are set kinda lower and this might be making the system unstable

39c on the chipset is high but shouldn't kill anything (make sure vdd isn't set higher)
you might wanna put a better heatsink on there
or just remove it add some artic silver and a nice 40 or 60mm fan if you want

you might also try timings like 2-3-3-11(more relaxed) or 2-2-2-6 (fastest imo) with that twinmos memory and 2.8v vdimm if you can (should be safe below 3v as bh-x and ch-x chips are pretty worthy)

Thanks for all the suggestions.

PSU - Zalman ZM300a - What do you think about this. It wasn't cheap, and got an excellent review
CPU heatsink - Copper Delta heatpipe - again what about this for the CPU

I tried both sticks of memory in different slots. One at a time etc. No change though.

I ran out of Artic silver and was waiting for Arctic silver ceramique to come in stock.
But didn't think heat was too bad. But will take another look at this.

So should I take measures to replace PSU and or CPU. Drastic if it had nothing to do with them, but if you think they are not adequate then so be it.

Wait for reply and then get to work.

the psu "should" be ok its a good quality unit. but my antec 300watt was choking under a simlar system a year ago (albiet lesser processor and I had 2 more drives than you). might be worth a shot to go down to bestbuy to get a tru430 or something plug it in and see if it fixes your problem if it does return the psu to best buy and go over to newegg.com and pick up something like a fortron 400watt or antec tru380.

I have got thermal paste on at the moment, but not arctic silver. I wouldn't dream of using PC without it.

So suggest I try an Antec PSU. I hear the Trueblue got a fantastic rating in toms hardware.

I'll give it a go.

before you change yoru psu why not make sure that is the culprit - unplug some of the extras like cdrws etc etc so you just run the mobo/cpu/ram [1 stick]/gfx/hdd and see if you still get bsod with your setup

Hi again

I did try that before as I have 2 160 gig hard drives (IDE) and 1 SATA 160 gig. 1 DVDRW and 1 DVD ROM
I took out both roms and left just the one HDD. But it still happened.

This doesn't mean though that the Zalman is under performing, or has a fault.

I think I shall order the antec 480 or the Zalman 400 and flog the older Zalman 300

See how it goes.

Also I have just ordered arctic Silver 5. Not sure how good this one is. Arctic Silver Ceramique came out on top, with flying colours. But I just can't get it.

if anything, the fact that it does happen even after this suggests you will get the problem even with your new psu; its hunting time for another culprit....

My brother had a AMD 2100+ and when he first booted up it booted as a 1700+. Anytime he moved it up to a 2100+ in BIOS, it wouldn't boot. The problem was he had the heatsink the wrong way. So possibly remount the heatsink and make sure it is installed correctly, top of the line AS isn't required for cool temps....any AS3 or AS5 will be as efficient, don't be so concerned about the thermal paste.

Your PSU isn't causing your system to overheat. While I do think it is a good idea to upgrade your PSU (I prefer Enermax, consistant rails) this isn't your problem.

Hope you don't mind me pulling this one back, but the final result was the PSU

I newish ZalmanZM300a was causing the problems. Who would have thought it.

I have now purchased a ZALMAN ZM400B and all seems well.

Thanks for the input, but thought you may like to know. After all when you get this kind of repetative posting most think, ' Ah not again'

that was illuminating: thanks

the whole point of posting problems is being to learn how they got fixed!
