I'm a longtime dropbox user, and im up to almost 20GB of free storage through them, but ive been hearing a lot about sugarsync, and how they supposedly have many more features than dropbox.

Syncing any folder doesnt really appeal to me as something i need. the only feature ive heard about that may be useful is actually syncing across my android phone, as opposed to just being any to access it.

This way i could have it sync music or video files to my phone. I;ve tried titanium media sync, but it never seems to work right.

anyone prefer one service over the other?

I have used Dropbox before it was alright...upload and download is painful slow if you want to share medium to large file to other computers.

Rottie:
Did they have the sync on LAN set up when you tried? But I've not had an issue with the upload/download speeds in general. The Sync on LAN however helps a lot when it can work.

Minus is better than both. I've got 50GB on a free account from referrals. If you need to host files, Dropbox will suspend the file links when you exceed their restrictive bandwidth allowance. There are no such limitations using Minus.

??? I cant even find it. is this what i should be looking at? minus.com

not hosting any files
20GB from dropbox is more than enough, if sheer space is the issue, then skydrive gives you 50GB for free.

does it have all the features dropbox and sugarsync have? what does it have?

Minus has all the features of the others but is more generous. I've used all three and much prefer it over the others.

www.minus.com

If you had a referral thread going here people can join using your link and add their own. It's pretty easy to get referred up to the 50GB limit.

I like SugerSync. Had it for more than a year now...works well.

how does it compare to dropbox? Im considering converting, if it will actually synv folder to my mobile devices.

Im looking for pros vs cons, not just what you use, but also why.

i just found a free app in winmo 6 marketplace that runs dropbox on my phone... so ive been happy with dropbox.

but how do you get 20gb of space for free? ive had dropbox for a couple years i think, and i dont get more then 2gb. sync on lan never has worked for me either (is it because of win7 homegroups?)

What is the name of the app? I might like to try that out on my Omnia II.

I think you get a little more storage for the money. Also, you can sync files across many computers or phones in the base package.

I don't know much about Dropbox.

If you are considering Sugarsync, you could take a look at SafeSync by Trend Micro ( They also do AV software, so should be reasonably trustworthy)

I have tried all 3 services, and while Sugarsync has more features that Dropbox, it can be a bit complictaed. SafeSync seems to best of both worlds. It has more features, but is alot eaiser to use.

I hope this helps.

Trend Micro generally has an extremely poor reputation, perhaps matched only by McAfee. I, for one, am not about to trust anything made by Trend Micro.

I love sugarsync, just because I can have multiple folders backed up, not just one...dedicated one.

But that doesn't appeal to you, so I don't really know the differences past that.

Been using Dropbox 2gb is free and if you download with this link:

NO REFERRAL LINKS
Do it again and you'll be considered a spammer and will be banned as such.

AT Mod
Gillbot

we both benefit with more space
Still trying to decide if I like it the same or better or worse than SugarSync
so far Dropbox seems a faster overall better experience, while SugarSync feels more informative in regards to shared folders and permissions

Will look into it.
I recently heard of Box, but was dissapointed to see it doesn't sync like Dropbox. (I think?)

Haven't been able to get anyone to use my Dropbox referral links, so I'm kind of meh about that right now.

Otherwise, Dropbox has taken care of all my needs, for the most part, with minimal issue.

I use dropbox on my PC's and droptext on my mobile device. I use droptext to execute commands on my PCs and also for link sharing. For example when I'm trying to watch a video on my ipoop, and it wont play, I just paste the link into the droptext file for one of my PC's, and it plays the video on that PC. I dont know how sugarsync works, but I like that dropbox works with actual folders, so my custom software that uses basic file I/O (CStdioFile) works without any fuss.

They both backup and sync to their cloud servers and your devices. To backup and sync files, you have to put your files and folders in the "dropbox" folder in DROPBOX and in the "briefcase" in SUGARSYNC. That's where the similarities ends. SUGARSYNC has the added feature of backing up and syncing ANY FOLDER OR ANY FILE on your computers or devices to their server. So you can sync anything you want on all your systems. Think of it as google calendar if you've ever worked with it.

With that said, syncing you DESKTOP is fairly easy once you understand the difference betw magic briefcase and "desktop". You drop the files in briefcase to sync and/or you select any files on your "desktop" to sync. To figure out how to sync your android is a little confusing, but with a little persistence, you'll be able to figure out how it works.

In my Sugarsync app, I turned off photo sync under setting in my smartphone because it doesn't sync the videos you take with it. Instead, I go to my smartphone device, find the DCIM and the folder containing the pics and videos. Hold it down until you see "sync to SugarSync". That is it.
