Okay all, here is what you've been waiting for! The HD dropping fest was done and here are the results:
I DO believe they were all Seagates, but unsure. If it's important, I'll check and see...still got them somewhere...properly labeled for sure. lol.
There were two. Both were between 160 - 300 MB (NOT GB! LOL!), and I DO believe they were both seagate...but I can check for sure on that if curious. Also, when testing, I would do a FULL format in DOS (format c: /u) to show if it worked, but gave bad sectors.
The first one (hell, I couldn't resist) I thru about 2 car lengths (just becuause I hated the HD...not expecting it to function at ALL afterwards) and of course it was dead afterwards. It made a REALLY loud screech when first powered up, but no detection at all. Before the 'toss', it had NO bad sectors, if you can believe that.
The second one I did a 'stage' process. I decided to be FAIR about it, so I simply kept it in the house, and did a 3 stage drop process:
1.) 4' Drop on carpet: A-OKAY! Checked out with NO bad sectors
2.) 6' Drop on carpet: Again, A-Okay! Checked out with NO bad sectors
3.) 8' Drop on carpet: Well, this was the final straw (I'm sure the other two drops contributed). When I fired up the system, screeches and squaks from this HD like you wouldn't believe. It wouldn't be detected at all (even tho the poor HD TRIED as all get out to properly spin).
There's my story. I may try more elaborate destructive tests in the future (if I can get more small useless HD'z like those)...and if so, I'll elaborate then as well.
All in all, glad to be rid of them. The AMD K6-2 system that I tested them in is still running great!
