I have an old 150-180MB HD. I think I'm gonna format it (format c: /u) and make sure no bad sectors....which I think I did already...and then do it and see if it still works. Curiosity is killin me. hehehehehe.

Crap, I dropped my drive on my hardwood floor, right when I got it. I knew I should have put in carpet...

I've got a couple of 1 giggers laying around that work perfectly....could format it in DOS, take it out....open the front door and throw it about 10 feet....see if it works, ey? LOL! Wouldn't put it in MY system to test it. Just an old P3 566 or something. hehehehehehe.

Any bets?

When I worked for a components reseller (doing computer shows), at the end of the show when we were packing up, I had to take the HDs out of the glass display case. He would always freak out and tell me to be careful doing that. I was always careful, but he was just.. like that. For those that know, it is wise to be concerned about shock affecting HDs. (It can also affect opticals, and throw the sensitive laser-head out of alignment.) When you have a case of 30 HDs or so, dropping it even a foot, could well cost you thousands of dollars in merchandise, if most of them later turn out to be defective. Heck, I even get nervous after buying a brand-new retail-box HD these days, even putting it on the cushioned back-seat of my car, because some of the holes in the road are so bad around here. (It's amazing that they can even keep New England in roads, quite frankly, seeing what nature does to them every winter.)

Perhaps HD mfgs should use that as an advertising gig? A bunch of guys playing street-hockey with a HD, and then plugging it in and watching a movie off of it later?

Kind of like the gorilla and Samsonite(tm) luggage commercials..

WW2Planes1 - thanks for those numbers.

100Gs isn't so bad then; I think some drives can take over 250Gs when they're not running - Seagate's site lists 350Gs for the non-operating shock for some of their drives. So the carpet might have saved the drive's life.

Dropped a brand new hard drive in an external enclosure from about 2.5 feet while it was transfering a large mpeg file. Started chattering immediatly. Quickly pulled the power and tried it out. It still seemed to work. It was on a plastic matt on carpet. Did have one disk error when I ran partition magic check error utility that it fixed. Copied multiple mpegs and seems ok.

I plugged it in and now it clicks, reminiscent of a Deathstar. So Hard Drive + 3 Foot Drop = Dead Hard Drive. (Of course yours had carpet, so there is still hope).

Okay all, here is what you've been waiting for! The HD dropping fest was done and here are the results:

I DO believe they were all Seagates, but unsure. If it's important, I'll check and see...still got them somewhere...properly labeled for sure. lol.

There were two. Both were between 160 - 300 MB (NOT GB! LOL!), and I DO believe they were both seagate...but I can check for sure on that if curious. Also, when testing, I would do a FULL format in DOS (format c: /u) to show if it worked, but gave bad sectors.

The first one (hell, I couldn't resist) I thru about 2 car lengths (just becuause I hated the HD...not expecting it to function at ALL afterwards) and of course it was dead afterwards. It made a REALLY loud screech when first powered up, but no detection at all. Before the 'toss', it had NO bad sectors, if you can believe that.

The second one I did a 'stage' process. I decided to be FAIR about it, so I simply kept it in the house, and did a 3 stage drop process:

1.) 4' Drop on carpet: A-OKAY! Checked out with NO bad sectors
2.) 6' Drop on carpet: Again, A-Okay! Checked out with NO bad sectors
3.) 8' Drop on carpet: Well, this was the final straw (I'm sure the other two drops contributed). When I fired up the system, screeches and squaks from this HD like you wouldn't believe. It wouldn't be detected at all (even tho the poor HD TRIED as all get out to properly spin).

There's my story. I may try more elaborate destructive tests in the future (if I can get more small useless HD'z like those)...and if so, I'll elaborate then as well.

All in all, glad to be rid of them. The AMD K6-2 system that I tested them in is still running great!

I just dropped my brand new 400gig hard disk off the 8th floor of my apartment building. Now it does not work! But on the plus side it went through my neighboors windshield. Serves him right.

Ouch!!

This was a real good thread. I always have nightmares when installing/uninstalling HDs; even a small shake freaks me out!

Oh, and RezMN, you didn't tell us what happened :curious;
