I had to swap chips with my Mom's machine I built recently because her board didn't support the tbred. I gave her my Pali 1800+ for her Tbred 1800+. I just finished overclocking it to 2.1ghz at 191fsb on my A7N8X deluxe. I ran 3dmark2003 (bench 4749) and just finished playing BF1942 for an hour, so it seems stable. Just air cooling at 1.65 volts. I'm really happy with the free upgrade. My Mom's machine is very stable now too.

The Tbred has the B core JIUHB, week 0308. From what I've read, I guess the chips in the week 2-10 batches are pretty good. I know I can't complain with a 37% overclock from standard specs. Now, I'll wait for the Athlon64 before I upgrade again.

I spend more on Starbucks and lunches for the week!

even if it is an "A"....nice price!

If B's didn't exist, this would be uber hot. But since they do, I think it is better paying the $4 more dollars and get a guaranteed DUT3C JIUHB from googlegear.

if i get an A (instead of the good B) from newegg, can i RMA it for full refund or does it have to be exchange (for exchanges-how many times can i exchange it to try and get the B version?)

Yeah, you could but why? Newegg says no where that they are shipping B chips only. It's not a good practice to do, but unfortunately many take part in it.

Its ironic that almost everyone who gets an A will rma it. Newegg probably needs to drop the price way lower and set a non-refundable note for this product if they want to get rid of them.

Exactly, you take a gamble on whether you will get an A or B core. Deal with it, if you want guarantee's, order from a vendor that guarantees B cores :|

So, which Mobo and Ram (brand and model #) setup would be best to run with the 1.5v B 1700+ (the one that may hit 2.2 to 2.4 Ghz)? I haven't kept up with the current stuff out there. Is the A7N8X deluxe the best of the bunch?

Man, I don't really need it, but maybe it is a good time to upgrade my 900MHz Duron...

I was think of ordering around 20+ of these CPUs from NewEgg and hopefully find one or two with the good stepping. The rest will be returned. Only catch is: Does NewEgg charge an evil restocking fee?

I've returned a couple things to NewEgg and they haven't charged me. If you read their return policy though it clearly states there is a restock fee. So if they do charge you there's not much you can beef about. If they start seeing massive amounts of returns, like on these T-bred As for example, then maybe they'll start following their published policy

My KT266a board is probably going to top out at 2-2.1 GHz anyway -- my top multiplier is 16, times 133 equals 2.1. Plus my memory is limited to PC2100 (although could probably be pushed higher). What is a reasonably priced and reasonably quiet heatsink/fan that would be sufficient to cool the 2 GHz range for a "B" chip? Are there any miracle combos like that $6 unit SVC had awhile back?

On the above question about the KT133a board, you need to see what your top multiplier is with the latest BIOS update, then multiply that times 133. Your board will probably not be stable much beyond 133 MHz. You also need to make sure you have an "overclocker friendly" board that allows voltage adjustments.

I was thinking about ordering a 100 and returning all but the best one.

Will Newegg mind ?

I think people should be a little upset about getting an "A". In any other situation I'd expect a vendor to rotate the stock "normally", selling old before new.

It's very possible that AMD is giving Newegg special pricing to dump their "A" chips. I'lll bet Newegg is the biggest of the oem parts vendors, probably by a wide margin. Dell and Gateway would be better yet, but I'll bet they're not selling many (or any) 1.7 AMD systems.

The 1700+ is rated @ 1.46 GHz, NOT 1.7.

Sheesh, you knew what I meant. The big vendors don't explain this distinction in their ads. If you go around clearing up every possible discrepency between AMD's nominal rating and actual speed, you will be a busy person indeed. It's actually 1.47, by the way. (round up)

The "U" in DUT3C tells us this is a 1.60 VCore "B" chip, and good for about 2Ghz. I'm looking for the DLT3C "B" chip, with the 1.50 VCore and potential to hit 2.2 to 2.4GHz. The tricky thing is, the Thoroughbred "A" chips were DLT3C too. You need more data, like the stepping code, to know what you have. A's have a stepping code which ends in "A" While B's have a stepping code which ends in "B" (AIUGB).

Sorry people. My reply was to "Replay"'s comment. Once again, is this true? I thought "DLT3C" chips were the "A" chips.

I had MSI KT133a board (I think it was called k7t Turbo2), and worked great with pc133 memories. I had it overclocked to xp2100+ speed with the "B" chips from Newegg, when they had them. What more can you ask for with pc133 modules?

Newegg should just sell their "A" cores for $42 and their "B" cores for $50, or some other price scheme. It would cut down on returns, and satisfy the overclockers and non-overclocking budget hunters alike.
