I dropped Netflix streaming. I still get the discs by mail for a few select tv series I watch and the latest movies. It's just that I've seen most everything worthwhile on Netflix instant and they aren't adding any new content.

Not having sports (basketball specifically) sucks but it's probably for the best that I don't spend much time in front of a tv listening to the bs.

So no cable, Netflix,or Amazon. Yes I'm cheap.

Who's the provider for game center/MLB?

Do any such packages exist for NBA/NFL?

The NHL & MLB respectively are providers. You get the content directly from the source. I have apps on my Roku and PS3 for NHL and MLB. They also have apps for ios and android (it is great for watching games on my back deck on the ipad)

The NBA has a subscription program too (at least I see the channel available on the Roku). I don't care for Basketball though, so I can't comment on it.

The one downside is that games in your "local broadcast area" are blacked out. Not a big deal for me as I am a Pirates/Pens fan in upstate NY. You can get around the restriction by using VPNs to remote cities as well. NFL is the one that you are stuck without (I just watch games on OTA).

I dropped most of my cable package with Comcrap about 2 months ago. I cut my bill in half. It cost ~$10 more if I had only internet and basic cable was ~$10 more so I am paying for basic "HD" cable. Unfortunately the stupid converter puts everything back to 4:3 ratio.

You can watch some of the cable shows on Hulu 30 days after they aired. I also log into comcast.com since they stream a few shows about a week after they air.

The biggest problems I had are:

1. Sports. I'm going to miss them.
2. I still need internet. And the price goes up without cable. A lot. I'll spend like $80 a month for just internet, or $120 for internet and tv. The savings isn't really worth it at that price.

2 reasons to have cable:
1) you don't have friends, but love sports
2) you need a 24hour news network to tell you how to think

Otherwise you can pirate anything you want; or you can wait for it to show up on netflix.

Sports is the only problem. Been calling this for almost 2 years now. Once the leagues can make modern contracts cable companies are gonna hurt, unless they adapt as well.

wtf kinda internet are you buying? 150mb/down 150mb/up??

hehehe...I wish I could be so lucky. For me, I'll be paying like $130 after fees for cable internet with a 200gig cap. My first six months, I'm paying a reduced rate of $85.

I didn't get tv. If I did, it adds another $80 for basic, and it would only discount my internet by $10-15. Guess that's what happens when there isn't much competition...

Do it. It's wasted expense. I did it in 2008 - haven't looked back.
Been about 7 years for me. Forget what it's like to watch SportsCenter every night, although there are ways around that.

Not sure if I'll stick with Netflix (probably), or jump over to Amazon Prime or Redbox Instant.

The approx $190 I pay for

digital cable
HD channels
HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz, Encore
cable internet
phone + long free long distance
Netflix streaming
all equipment

is still worth it. I'm a media whore, I need it. After a long day's work I want to have access to EVERYTHING. I can't imagine missing the Blackhawk's playoff games, for instance.

I got a slingbox 500 to watch anything anywhere too, It's a pretty solid device.

When i travel for work we always get at least basic cable and i pretty much dont use it. The commercials drive me nuts. A 22 minute show that has 8 minutes worth of commercials is stupid. Then even HBO gets old as it seems like they play the same movies while adding a new one every now and then.

As for me been years since i had cable. I get OTA and get all the major networks in HD (90% of the time at least). Use netflix for discs (prefer bluray discs to streaming) and use the amazon prime app on my tv. Plus i have a media server to store my movies for instant access. If i cant find something ot watch its my own damn fault.

Internet is the one downfall as it costs 80 a month right now (though way more for a "bundle") but i got to call and see if i can ge tin on a new offering they have at 50 bucks a month for 12 months

Not interested in B movies or A movies from 10 years ago. Even Breaking Bad season 5 I was able to get the discs over a month before they had it on instant. It's okay for someone new to Netflix but I've seen most of the worthwhile content and honestly adding B movies or independent documentaries doesn't do it for me.

I feel like I'm starting to reach that point... I usually subscribe to Netflix instant in the summertime when there's not much on tv and I'm spending a lot of time indoors, but I won't miss it too much when I cancel again in the fall.

I've got Amazon just as happenstance because I have Prime for the free shipping, and Netflix DVD's because there are still a lot of movies in my queue that aren't available online (legally or otherwise... gay movies, indie movies, etc)

What do you mean Netflix isn't adding new content? lmao

but that's an awesome site. going to have to check them out  when I'm on my smart TV gui, I swear Netflix only ever shows me the same dozen movies outside of what's in my instant queue.

We went to just OTA + Roku/SMART Tv.

We get all of the major networks in HD, and a handful of other HD channels. I will however need to purchase an amplifier in the near future. Certain channels come in a bit shotty, but for the most part I couldn't be happier.

this thread has me thinking about trying OTA... worried about how the reception would be, though. I live in a railroad apartment with neighboring houses about 5' from me. the only window I have with a good sky view is in the kitchen.

Go to antennaweb.org/ and type in your address. It will give you the direction nearby transmitters and an indication of what you can expect reception-wise (will even give you an estimate of how powerful/what type of antenna you will need)

Get an HDHomeRun Dual and build yourself a Media Center HTPC.

You don't need the more-expensive HDHR prime since you don't need CableCARD support.

To answer OP's question there are no good options for recording OTA.

PC = works, but big start up cost if you don't have the gear, pain in ass
Tivo = start up cost + ongoing cost
Other DVR devices (there are a few on amazon) = start up cost, not consistently well reviewed
SimpleTV = promising, with low start up cost and no monthly fee, but pretty much universally panned by critics as too slow/worthless right now.
Other options like Aereo serve too few US customers to be considered relevant.

I put in an antenna last month and dropped 2/3 of my directv receivers. Next one will get the kick soon. I hate commercials and so will end up watching even less TV. Mainly use it for evening news.

The promise of cord cutting gets better all the time. Sat & Cable are fighting tooth and nail, but the proof is in the pudding. Cable subscriber numbers are now net-down from peak, and if Time Warner et al. aren't worried they should be. Sat growth has slowed to a trickle.

I have had cable (or sat) for decades, since I was a kid. When I drop it for good shortly I will never go back. It is a ridiculous business model, pedaling endless amounts of truly brain-rotting smut on us. It's like an ocean, all this water and nothing to drink unless you like being force fed so much trash. Most of the quality stuff--and there is a lot--is actually quite easy to get. So, no, you may have a harder time watching honey boo boo but if you want to watch the fictional series you can wait for them on Netflix or pay per episode (still cheaper than monthly cable bill).

There are a lot of sports on line. firstrowsport.eu , espn3, watch espn app, justin tv. You can watch HBO Go if you know someone that will let you use the account and password. Same thing may apply to to espn3 your IP does have an agreement with Espn.

Congrats. I cut the cord 7 years ago and have missed it a total of zero times. Added bonus is that my kids are growing up in a cable-free house. Not that they aren't inundated with electronics, but at least they don't have the crack of cable tv (they do have minecraft though).
