To answer OP's question there are no good options for recording OTA.
PC = works, but big start up cost if you don't have the gear, pain in ass
Tivo = start up cost + ongoing cost
Other DVR devices (there are a few on amazon) = start up cost, not consistently well reviewed
SimpleTV = promising, with low start up cost and no monthly fee, but pretty much universally panned by critics as too slow/worthless right now.
Other options like Aereo serve too few US customers to be considered relevant.
I put in an antenna last month and dropped 2/3 of my directv receivers. Next one will get the kick soon. I hate commercials and so will end up watching even less TV. Mainly use it for evening news.
The promise of cord cutting gets better all the time. Sat & Cable are fighting tooth and nail, but the proof is in the pudding. Cable subscriber numbers are now net-down from peak, and if Time Warner et al. aren't worried they should be. Sat growth has slowed to a trickle.
I have had cable (or sat) for decades, since I was a kid. When I drop it for good shortly I will never go back. It is a ridiculous business model, pedaling endless amounts of truly brain-rotting smut on us. It's like an ocean, all this water and nothing to drink unless you like being force fed so much trash. Most of the quality stuff--and there is a lot--is actually quite easy to get. So, no, you may have a harder time watching honey boo boo but if you want to watch the fictional series you can wait for them on Netflix or pay per episode (still cheaper than monthly cable bill).
