Police departments probably make more from confiscation than they could if weed was taxed. So they are in no hurry to legalize.

No, Wetsprocket, there is no way they make more money on busts than through taxation. If you think about it, they maybe seize 10% of all the drugs coming into the country, ( i vaguely remember this number, it could be absolutely something different) If you look at the amount of pot smoked in the U.S., it is mind-boggling. They would make millions from taxation, that they wouldn't know what to do with it all.

Seriously though, pot was legal until 1937 in this country, until Hearst and DuPont used their influence to get Congress to ban it. It's not any worse for you than alcohol. I think the sentiment about it is changing. The people that buy into the idea of drugs being &quot;bad&quot; are slowly fading. Our parents and the generation that grew up in the 60's and 70's; these are the people being elected to Congress now and for the most part do not think of pot as an evil drug. Many from this era experimented and know that it is not evil, like its representation in &quot;Reefer Madness&quot; and D.A.R.E.

My mates house was searched the other day. Aborginies looked over the fence and saw 4 plants growing, and called the cops. He wasn't home, comes home and the neighbours tell him the cops are coming back to search the place. Gets rid of his bongs, but forgets his BB gun (in Australia here). Cops come with a warrant, take his gun and then decide to look in the shed. Got all his uncle's stuff in there, turns out to be thousands of dollars worth of hydro growing gear, chemicals, lights the lot not very good, but the cops were cool about it, just loaded it all up and took it away nice fine coming his way i think....morale of the story??? LEGALISE POT!!!!! hehehehehehe

Because it will be harder to enforce taxation laws than on cigs and alcohol due to the way its currently sold. That trend to buy from bob down the street will continue and the government wont make cash. It also is in a way endorsing its use to children (you could counter and say its more enticing since its illegal). I do thikn dare is effective for a few years. It gives the really young kids a reason to say no when they otherwise wouldnt have a reason not to say yes. Lets be honest we don't need 7th graders smokin' it up because they cant think of a good reason not to. Its quite easy to say you know the risks, but lets be honest, it seems pretty harmless at the time doesn't it? Later in life you might realize the risks involved, but if dad can go to the conveniece store and get a dime bag it doesn't seem all that bad does it? Saying you can do the same with tobacco or alcohol isn't a valid arguement either since just because thats the way it is doesn't mean thats the way it should be. Anyway I'm tired and need to get to sleep. Does it really matter that much anyway? I think most people who want to smoke do, and even if you get caught with some on you unless its quite a bit ther eis hardly much a penalty right?

I was merely saying that I think it's refreshing to see people (many of whom don't even smoke pot themselves) realize that there are no good reasons to justify why alcohol is legal and marijuana isn't. DARE uses scare tactics to convince people that marijuana kills, when often it is just as dangerous (if not less so) than alcohol is.

Of course marijuana isn't good for your health when used excessively, but neither is alcohol (or just about anything else you can think of).

It's nice to see eyes being opened to the true reality of one of our country's most glaring double standards.

TDP: yeah Reefer Madness is hilarious... Picked it up on DVD for like $5 about a year ago.

No. Its become big business for the legal system, lawyers, and &quot;correctional facilities&quot; to crack down on pot users, not to mention ridiculous sentences for petty crimes (3-strike sentences in CA ring a bell?) Thank god the judicial system saved us from the pizza thief!
