you can make a budget kit sound pretty good, especially for practicing

still, ive found that an okay one with good symbols (bad ones are forever) takes about 700 dollars.

cymbals do make a difference. my first kit cost about 350-400

i got good cymbals though, signature series paiste.
crash/rides are just painful to listen to as are a cheap set of hi-hats and your main crash

What would you say are some good brands? I play for my youth group on my church's Tama and Pearl drumsets sometimes, but they spent thousands on those

wow, that's too bad really. Since you know what it sounds and feels like to play on a quality set. If you were like me you didn't know what you were missing.

All major cymbal producers have budget lines.
its pretty easy to tell though. If it costs more, than it is usually pretty good. A cymbal is something you have to go to the store to get. Someone else may like it but you just have to hear it for yourself and see if it fits the sound you're looking for.

My band wrote a song and I thought it needed something inbetween guitar riffs. So i went out and tried a bunch of splash cymbals and ended up getting an 8" Zildjian K for about 60 bucks

o yea a tip for the new drummers. don't hold your left stick the classic way. it's actually bad for the tendon on the arm. (it's ok to learn it as long as it's not your normal style of playing.

How can everyone just accept that Neil Pert is the world's greatest drummer without questioning it. John Bonham, Keith Moon, and Ginger Baker don't even get a nod? Come on guys I know Neil Pert is good but anyone who puts Rush on a higher pedestal than Led Zeppelin needs a reality check.

I guess I should get in on this. I've been playing drums for 11 years and my band has just been signed. Our CD came out on Oct. 11. Rumpelstiltskin Grinder on Relapse records. Check out the website in my sig. Rock on Drumheads!
