Dry socket

I know there have been a million threads on wisdom teeth extractions, but I didn't see much specifically about dry socket except try not to get 'em.

I had my lower left wisdom tooth pulled on Tuesday, and the area is still swollen today. I looked at the socket and it is not a pretty sight; however, there is no real pain associated with that. The websites I've looked at just say that "if you can see the bone past the socket, experience pain and foul odor, you most likely have dry socket." But everything is so puffy on that side that I wouldn't be able to see if I wanted to, and I can't brush my teeth like normal, which is attributing to an 'odor' (until i gently brush my teeth again).

Would it be very obvious to me if I had dry socket? Has anyone experienced this before?

Dude if you had a dry socket you would know it! The most intense pain you could experience. It sounds like you might have an infection tho.

i really hope not (either one). I've been rinsing my mouth out with warm salt water after eating along with brushing my teeth, and I've been taking my antibiotics as directed.

Mosh, I will call my dentist tomorrow. His office is closed today. :/

no one covers for him? they usually do that. listen to his answering machine and you might find he does have someone.

Infact I got all 4 wisom teeth pulled at the same time and my Oral surgeon warned me of the dry socket issue and gave me his 24 hour emergency number just in case

I just called them, and the person who I talked to (not my dentist) said that the discoloration was normal, and that I would know if I had dry socket.

But I asked her if I should take naproxen or something for the swelling, and she asked me if that was something that is prescribed or could be found over the counter She seemed really confused at that moment like she didn't know what it was or something...and then I said 'Aleve'...and she just said..."well if you think it'll work, you can try it."

I may have to call back tomorrow.

My oral surgeon said the worst swelling would be on the third day... so it's not abnormal for it to still be swolen today.
(having mine out tomorrow )

Mate, you're doing everything just fine: gentile washing with salted water, etc. You should get through it OK.

If you start to feel an increase in pain, take a trip to your dentist.

Best of luck!

I had a dry socket, I couldn't open my mouth because it hurt so much, and I slept for 22 hours one day for the sole reason that it didn't hurt while I was asleep.

the blood clot forms and falls out, or just doesnt form where they removed the wisdom tooth from.

thus there is nothing covering your jaw, and well it tastes disgusting.
