Hey I am repainting my room. Two of the walls have a textured pattern. The layer of paint began to rip off. (See picture)

-What was the technique used to get this textured wall?

-Am I ripping apart the drywall by tearing off this layer of paint?

-Should I just rip it all off and sand then paint?

Thanks!

I just posted a similiar question in my bathroom. You can see what I had to deal with :

What I did was put some putty up, let it dry, sanded it to be a bit less then the wall around it.

Then blasted it with some textured paint in a can (you can get it from home depot/lowes/menards).

Let it dry, and painted over it..done.

I was to make the wall a smooth finish though. I just want to make sure I'm not ruining the wall by ripping it all off.

To me, it looks like the brown stuff underneath is whatever drywall and the layer of white underneath the blue paint is spray texture (orange peel). For little sections, you can get it in a can from your local home improvement store. For entire walls, I'd go with a compressor and sprayer.

If you want to go flat, take it all off and put a coat of primer before paint.

<== could be completely wrong

It looks like 3 layers. Be very sure you're not into the paper on the drywall, if that happens you'll have to rip it all out. Your best bet will be to remove whatever is lose, coat it with an oil base primer, then repair the area with plain drywall compound.

So I just realized that the drywall paper layer is underneath the peach colored section. I should be all set ripping off the blue paint.

Thanks guys!

Looking at that pic, I'd say YES you are! Easiest way I've dealt with this, was to buy some very thin sheet rock, tack it up, prime, paint, and be done with it.
