I just ordered something like the first one but much cheaper. Its a "slot 1" unit and I don't think that alone will allow you to play GBA games at all and very little homebrew. The second will allow you to do both but requires more hardware also.

Will not void your warranty.

It won't void your warranty. What you want to buy is a flash card (such as the M3 and the Supercard Lite). This is what I got. Then you'll want to look for a good SNES emulator (which I haven't found yet...). It plays GBA games natively.

For music/text files and other stuff, you'll want to get a program called Moonshell.

And... as a precaution, this stuff is pretty sketchy (bordering illegal). The mods might lock this topic.

I hear the DS-Xtreme is a really good homebrew solution. You don't need any mods or anything, plays all homebrew material!

Just get a SuperCard Lite, same(or better) homebrew support and it doesn't cost $120

EDIT: Plus it has a decent rate of updates unlike the DS-X team

Also: For SuperCard related purchases, go with RealHotStuff

Another product to consider is the R4 Revolution for DS. This is what I have my eyes on once I get a DS Lite.

If he's playing games he owns then it shouldn't be illegal..

Also, realhotstuff is great. Go for the Supercard Lite/Superkey combo.

If you own the games you wouldn't need a ROM or emulator. It's all BS.

Or the M3 DS Simply. Pretty much the exact same thing. The problem I'm running into is that they're new so not a lot of the homebrew applicaitons work on them yet. I just like being able to carry around just one cartridge with all my games on it when I go somewhere.

I got the m3 lite from a group buy. You can check it out here

It so far has perfect emulation of both GBA and DS roms. It used micro SD right now, but it comes 5 different cases to fit each DS color, which is nice.

I'm a little confused, how much memory is on the R4? OR do you add a Micro SD card? If so, I can't see where. There website isn't very helpful in answering this question.

yeah, you can't really carry around your SNES w/you... not as easily portable compared a DS.

Yeah, both the R4 or M3 are just an empty cartridge. You need to add a memory card. I plan to get a 2GB Transflash card to go along with my R4.

Just to add, R4 probably wouldn't be best for him. He's looking for GBA, SNES, and homebrew.

None of the Slot-1 cards (SCDS, R4, M3Simply, EZFlash V, etc etc) support GBA at all, and the homebrew is hit or miss for most of them. It is getting better with DLDI support however.

It's great if you're looking for NDS games, but Slot 2 is still the way to go for homebrew(Supercard for that) however is GBA is REALLY a concern, M3 is best GBA at the moment.

Got FF6 the other day. its pretty neat.

also got a used passcard and passkey. plan on putting my daughters games on it so she does not have to swap out the nintendogs. she loves those games.

pretty disapointed in the homebrew though. wich was the main reason i got it. sigh

Carrying one cart is easier than carrying a whole collection.
