I always hear DS is great but I honestly don't know much about it. I hear it has great games but not many are highly rated when I look at the metacritic.

I like all kinds of games as long as they are challenging.

Friend got me Zelda for Xmas but I don't have a DS so now I'm thinking about getting one. You guys think they are worth it?

Does it have alot of good RPGs?

It seems like the PSP might be a better deal with the God of War and the Final Fantasy game coming out for it, but I mostly hear people bash the PSP.

If you want a hand held gaming system, its basically DS or the PSP. One thing I didn't like about the DS when it came out was I would like to see a much bigger screen. Instead it came with two screens which are almost the same size as the old GBadvanceSP screen. I honestly don't use hand helds alot so I held off for a long time. I did have the GBA-SP and since Nintendo has a trade in deal I traded it in and picked up a new DS Lite for $99. The PSP was so much more expensive when it came out and I didn't see many game titles I liked so I never seriously considered getting one. There are alot more PSP titles now but I don't know if the prices is still $250 or not. $130 is easier to swallow for a system that only gets occasional use. My daughter has the DS Lite now for a year and she likes it alot. She has Dogs, Mario Kart (now lost! GRRR), Bleach, My Sims and now Zelda for Christmas.

Anyway, there are a ton of titles out now for the DS including RPG's (mainly the turn based Japanese type). I suggest going to www.IGN.com and reviewing thier DS game list and ratings to get an idea what they have you like. You mentioned Zeldahantom Hour Glass got a great rating and looks similar to the GC Wind Waker game. There are some FF titles out and a few other anime type.

DS is very cool if you find yourself in a position to play it a lot, aka waiting on a bus, bored at lunch, sitting in the back of a car while someone else is driving.

Zelda is a great game, other games for the DS I love are Elite Beat Agents, Mario Kart DS, New Super Mario Bros, and Orcs & Elves. A lot of people like the Pokemon games, they don't appeal to me, but to each his own.
I am an Orcs & Elves fanatic tho .

Pretty much sums it up.

If you're in the market for a handheld, DS is awesome. The DS has succeeded where many consoles haven't dared even venture in that everyone can find a good selection of games that they will enjoy, and really creative way to play a lot of them.

The added bonus of being able to play GBA games just makes the library all that much bigger, too.

I haven't followed the "price drop" history. Glad to see it has come down. Anyway, since I traded in my older GBA-SP, the PSP would have been $70 more since the actual cost to me was $99 (I had a 5 year old GBA-SP that was in great condition, charger, box and instructions). Add on the price of the games too. Don't get me wrong, I've finally seen a few titles for the PSP that I like, but I don't hand held game alot so the DS Lite will do me for quite a while. Plus, my daughter has the DS Lite too so there is a potential for us to multiplay a few games.

Yes, it's worth it. Between the DS games and GBA games I personally think the game selection is much better for the DS. If you like RPG's you can pretty much get any of the FF's before VII now. Also you have other great titles like metriod, all of the Castlevania releases for DS and GBA, and the mario games, mario cart, new super mario bro's. The list goes on and on. I think you would enjoy it if you can find time to play like others have said.

The only thing I don't like about the DS is that it relies too much on the gimmick controls.
I got Zelda and you basically control the whole game with the stylus! Won't even let me walk with the directional pad. And you have to blow at it, talk to it, and do all sort of that stuff.

That's why in public I only play my PSP

No actually. DS really lacks good RPGs. In fact, I can't really think of one. FFIV remake is coming soon, and that may become the best one. It has some good games, but considering how large its library is, the number of good titles is a bit disappointing.

It's a bit like Wii, a lot of useless games but there are some gems. Get the DS if you like casual stuff, like puzzles (Picross, Braining Training games), and light adventure (Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk, Zelda).

I have both, each has its own advantages and disadvantages. If I had to chose though, PSP fits my gaming style more. DS is still a great system, but there aren't that many appealing games to me in its library. It just depends on your gaming style.

EDIT: There are good RPGS on GBA (FFs) you can play on the DS, but I was talking about RPGs on DS itself.

I just ordered a PSP Slim because it can do more than just game. If I want to watch movies, I can watch them on a nice size screen. And with the new PSP Slim, that screen is actually 30% brighter.

I never tried a DS, but if all you want to do is game, then it should fit the bill. But then again, the PSP will fit that same bill.

If you want to do more than game, get a laptop. What does the PSP have that can compare to Advance Wars, Age of Empires, and Panzer Tactics?

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of The Lions
Field Commander
Jeanne d'Arc

to name some in strategy, strategy/RPG category. I understand DS is a great handheld but dismissing PSP is plainly fanboism.

EDIT: I am not calling you, BladeVenom a fan boy, I am just saying to people who think "PSP has no games!!"

Because a laptop fits ever so comfortably in your pocket and costs >$200.

Yeah no sh!t. I HAVE a laptop and it is a pain in the ass to pull out during a flight and play a game on it or even watch a movie. That is why I bought a PSP. "If you want to do more than game, get a laptop?" Yeah, that about the dumbest suggestion I've heard.

I don't have much experience with the DS but it looks like a nice system. I haven't seen much good games for the PSP, and as far as movies, fuck buying those UMD discs. "Universal" Media Disc, hahaha. Yeah. Screen is too small for a movie anyway, in my opinion.

Go ahead and get yourself a flashcard, like a R4DS, if you get the DS though.

That is the problem I'm having because there are some really good games for both.

Crisis Core and GOW on PSP look pretty sick but then alot of shit for ds looks really fun and I have a game for it that for some reason I got for Christmas.

Um, you don't buy UMD movies, you convert your DVDs to a PSP format, and copy it to your memory stick which can store quite a few movies depending on the capacity of the stick. As for screen size, well that's personal preference. All I can tell you is that's it's bigger than the Apple iTouch/iPhone screen and perfect when flying.

The DS, while a great system, honestly doesn't have many great games.

Phantom Hourglass is my favorite by far; the game is excellent and a must-play handheld Zelda.
Elite Beat Agents is a unique and fun game that I recommend.
The Phoenix Wright games are supposed to be decent, but since the games are simply GBA ports and I didn't hear much about them until this latest one released (the third of the trilogy) I haven't bought any. I'm waiting for the next game, featuring more DS controls and a fresh new character.
Mario Kart is, well Mario Kart. It's fun, but you should know what to expect.
New Super Mario Brothers was disappointing for me, but others seem to like it. The game just lacked any excitement. The levels seemed boring and less inspiring than the Mario games of old.

That amounts to two games that I can really recommend.

As far as RPGs go, the PSP has the DS completely smoked. The only decent RPG I remember on the DS is Etrian Odyssey, which is a pretty hardcore old school dungeon crawler. The game does have its flaws though, such as repetition and tedium, but what do you expect from a dungeon crawler?

The PSP on the other hand has some great RPGs. Amazing strategy RPGs such as FFT, Jeanne d'Arc, and Disgaea come to mind. There are a load of normal JRPGs as well, my favorite of which is Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, a game that holds a special place in my heart. <3

The PSP also has some other interesting games, such as MGS: Portable Ops, Killzone, etc.

Also, I love being able to just shove my MS-PRO card in my PC and uploading some videos, songs, and pictures.

Anyway, both systems are pretty decent. The DS is overly popular with everyone, which is why I just wanted to point out that the system isn't as great as some make it seem as far as it's library is concerned. Also, anyone who says the PSP has no games is blind (although it used to be true). I'm shaping up to like the PSP's library more, as it caters some game types that I simply love. However, either choice would be a good use of hard-earned money.

Don't forget that for PSP you can play Playstation games too.

(Either bought via PS3 network or copy your own old games over to a PSP with a custom firmware).

Your PSP fits well in your pocket???

Add the cost of a battery pack, charger, and memory stick and a PSP costs as much as cheap on sale laptop.

WTF a battery pack and charger come with a PSP for $169.99, and a memory stick doesn't cost much more. I bought a 2GB memory stick for $35, and I'm sure there are smaller and cheaper ones. So I had to spend $70 more than a DS? Big whoop.

Exactly. And you can even go CRAZY and get a 4GB memory stick for $59! OH MY GOD, the money is just pouring out now! The DS is so much cheaper than the PSP, OH MY GOD! For about $200 you get a very well rounder pocket size entertainment system. I'd say that's not a bad price at all.

And yes, it fits in my coat pocket perfectly.

Are there any other uninformed fanboy comments you'd like to make about the PSP BladeVenom?
