DS3 DOA?

Got my ds3 965p in the mail today, all excited. Everything hooked up, no post. The board powers up and the fans spin, but no video. Swapped video card, same thing. I tried diff ram slots, using one stick, nothing. I even tried no video and no ram, it didn't even beep at me. I have the 12v and the 24 pin power plugged in...is there something I'm missing for this thing?

Did you try to clear the CMOS, attach the keyboard to the PS/2 port, and hold down the insert key while booting up?

I have tried clearing the cmos but not the insert key, I will try that.

Ok, I tried a ps2 keyboard and holding down the insert key, still nothing. Using an e6400 and using patriot pc667 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220095

Plug in the four pin connector under the cables in the pic. Should be near two capicitors(sp).

If you are referring to the +12v, it is connected, just obscured. My psu has 2 of them--some motherboards with dual cpus have seperate 12v's.

you have to use the right +12v from your psu though - check the manual, it probably says that only 1 of those cables can connect to the mobo.

Of the two 12v's, only one is keyed to fit in the mobo's plug. The correctly keyed one is what I have connected--it's the same 12v I've used with all previous boards.

Have you tried different RAM yet? If for some odd reason you got a board with a bios lower than F3 you could have a RAM issue with your Patriot modules.

I have no other ddr2 to try. I guess I am owned.

Even so, shouldn't the board beep at me (when the speaker is plugged into the board) when there is no ram? It doesn't even beep.

I had the DS3 with the original F1 BIOS and mine ran just fine with Patriot memory.

I had the same problem!:| And I'm not the only one! Some people get it later on, sometimes randomly, somteimes permanently. Still, with their no change in hardware it's obvious its the board's fault.
What ever you do DO NOT I repeat DO NOT send it back to Gigabyte/ the store you bought it from until you've tried everything else!
I sent mine back to the store, they sent it back to gigabyte (the store is in germany, dont know exactly where they sent it, apparently gigabyte wont allow the store to give the customer a new one directly, has to go through them).
Anyway, they've had my mobo for 20 days now. No word on progress, like I said I don't even know whereit is, no response on e-mails sent days ago!!
What are they doing? Keeping it hostage? Have it on a table staring on it? If it takes over two weeks to fix it, why not just send me a new one?

As far as I'm concerned, your (and mine) biggest problem is buying Gigabyte in the first place. Should have gone with asus.

So try with other memory and then update the bios. Or better yet buy a new motherboard. Non-Gigabyte. I have no idea if it will work with some other memory, but prepare to wait for an indefinite amount of time if you send the mobo back!!:|

I ended up rma'ing and just doing P5b.

I had the same type of problem and didn't have any other RAM to test it with so I tried it without and then 'rented' some RAM from BB (since they have a 30 day return policy). I tried the new memory and it booted up fine. I updated the BIOS and manully set the timings and voltage for my OCZ Platinum and I got the exact same issue. Nothing happened -- half a second of power, no beeps. I RMA'd the RAM and it now works fine with the new sticks.

Modestninja, do you mean both your original sticks were bad??
Isn't that higly unlikely?

I had the same reboot every 3 seconds when I first got my board, and it didnt help even if I removed both sticks. Tried with just one, too. Same thing.

Update on the RMA: STILL havent got my mobo... the store answered my (angry) email 8 days ago saying they would send me one, just be a couple of days. Yesterday they told me it was in the mail, should arrive soon... Right...

So: If I get my (new?) board tonight and it still doesnt work, I should try with new memory. At least to boot with and then change the bios settings?
But: Like I said, same thing without memory, has anyone tried booting a working board without any memory sticks connected???

My first run with the DQ6 was not stable. I tried everything and what "fixed" the issue was replacing the OCZ Plat with new ones. The store insisted it was a compatibility problem and I should not try the Plat again, but I did anyway and it worked.

I had a similar experience:

I ran across a similar problem with my Gigabyte 965P-DS3. Never was able to solve it, and RMA'd it. I had memory Corsair said was compatible. NO POST, fans sputtered a couple times, and then stayed on. Black screen, no error beeps. Per the suggestion on the forumn, I tried a different memory (a 1.8v generic stick), no change. Changed out power supply. Even tried leaving RAM out. NO error beeps. Put RAM back in, took out video card, no beeps. Even reset CMOS a couple times.

Changed out PCI video card (was using old PCI cards, since this build was to be a Folding box only), no go. (turns out the PCI slots are rev 2.3, and all my video cards were 2.2/2.1.). Wasn't worth the expense to buy a PCI-Express video card in the vain hope that was it.

Ordered up an Asus P5B Deluxe and am hoping for better results. I'm 0 for 1 with Gigabyte, 1 for 3 with Epox, 2 for 2 with MSI.

I'm 2 for 2 with DFI, 0 for 1 with MSI and 1 for 1 with epox. I will never buy another MSI board, ever. They are the biggest POS on the planet (this board was the top rated S754 board until the DFI hit the shelves). DFI is my #1 choice, followed probably by Abit, although I have never personally owned an Abit.

As for the gigabyte, until more later bios revisions are in the retail channel, you have to be careful with ram. It seems to be the same with any 965 based board atm, and part of the problem is most of us don't have extra sticks of DDR2 lying around, like we do DDR (theira stick on the desk right next to me lol).
