Hey gang, my wife's small business switched from Verizon DSL to the local cable company for phone and internet on Friday. After about 2 hours they got all of the phones working, but apparently they left without the internet working. They have a fairly simple network with a wireless router, a small switch, and a handful of wired ports.

I don't have a lot of experience with DSL - none in fact. So I was just curious if there were any settings in their router or PC's which were DSL specific that now need to be switched. I thought it would be a fairly seamless transition, where the cable model just provides the IP to the router just like with the DSL, but something is not right. As far as my wife said, they only ran a new line to the outside and installed the new modem. I hope they at least hooked up to the existing router.

I was going to swing by tomorrow to see if I could find out anything, but wanted to check with you guys first just incase.

Thanks!

Was the router configured to do PPPoE for the old DSL connection?
If so, you need to remove it from router.
Also check & make sure it's not set to a static IP on the WAN port.
Another thing you can try it power off cable modem & router.
Turn on modem, wait for it to stabilize, then turn on router to make sure the router didn't keep the old IP, even thought it may have been dynamic.

Thanks, I'll check on the PPPoE setting and see what that looks like. To be honest, all I've really ever done there is set up some printers and added a NAS drive. The guy that use to work there set up the router and all that, so I've never been in the router. But he's gone now so I'll head over and check out the router and reboot everything.

Also cable companies like to have MAC address protection. (Have no idea why they do that). They need to know the router's WAN MAC address.

Also PPPoE should not work with cable modems. Set it to Dynamic DHCP or static IP for the WAN port.

DSL is generally set to use PPPOE with a username and password.

Change this setting to DHCP (usually the first page of the router webpage).
