I know i signed the contract but doesn't that mean that i have the right to have a more stable service. half the time, the dsl is out. i really need help here. thanks.

How many dsl set filters are installed ? ? ?
How far from the CO are you ? ? ... DSL is limited to about 16000 feet at most

As to the filters, if you have more than 3, call Verizon and ask for a Whole House
DSL Filter / Splitter to be installed. It goes at point of entrance and the set dsl filters
are removed. You will need to run a cable from the DSL Output of the new spliter
to the DSL Modem / Router .. Also Verizon tech, can check the signal Level / Quality
where it comes into the home. You can have bad cable between your home and the
CO or it could be Load Coils that need removing or Bridge Taps that need to be cleared.
Bridge taps means your copper pair goes to more than 1 address or pole

wow thats a lot of info.

are filters the thing you attach to the phone line? because if they are, we don't have any because we don't have phone service. just dsl. other than that, i don't know about the other stuff. sorry.

what modem / router are you using? are you seeing the dsl light on the modem go out? have you tested this on more than one pc?

take any and all routers out of the picture and connect your pc directly to the modem...give it a go and see if you still get disconnected. if you're still having issues, give your provider a call as it could be a modem / line issue.

yes, the lights on the modem do go out. so i don't think the pc's or the router is the problem here. i will be giving verizon a call today or on tuesday. this is too much of a headache. is there a good chance that they would let me out of my contract?

Yes, but I believe you'll pay an early termination fee (which is pretty hefty). I wouldn't give up that fast though.

Call Verizon, you probably have something hooked up wrong.

They will let you out of the contract if they cannot provide you with the service you are paying for. But if it is something about your house or the way you are hooking things up then you are SOL.

From what he is saying it is pointing to a Line problem from the CO to the house.
Since he only has DSL and no Dial Tone service, dsl filters are not needed.
But the phone company still needs a clean line .. no high resistances, no resistance
to ground (called an escape), no foreign voltages (ac or dc) and Loading Coils &
Bridge Taps must be removed from the cable run or dsl will not work properly.
DSL runs at 10Mhz or so ... call Verizon and have the tech come out ... he will use
a data test set to see the DSL Levels at the home & modem / pedestal or pole .. if
there is a line problem, he will be able to tell and refer it to whatever dept needs to
fix it, such as cable splicer or carrier tech. I retired from that company, so I know
about how they work. As to early term fee, if the service is not meeting the rate
you ordered and it is an issue they can't fix, then I would not expect a fee to apply.
But you might need to get pushy (with tact) to make sure it is waived.

As noted, it's quite possible you have signal issues from your Central Office. This can be caused by long distances, bad wiring, and other factors.

I'd complain to Verizon. Keep a log of your downtime and of your complaints. They should send somebody to check the signal quality and the modem. If they can't provide reliable service, I'd expect them to admit it and to terminate your service without an extra fee.
