Well, you call your local Internet DSL provider, and ask them what hey have to offer.

You call your Local Internet Cable provider, and ask them what hey have to offer.

Then, if you can not make up your mind, post here Speed, and Price of offers.

Otherwise, is the same as asking, ?What color of shirt should I buy??

I know about the two type of service....
dsl: 256
cable: 300

but some people are telling me that, even the dsl is more slow by the numbers, is much faster than the cable....is that true....???

Yes, and No!

For Download files, the 300Mb/sec should yield a little more Speed.

For Display pages, and on line games, the DSL is slightly better then a same speed Cable.

Given the proximity of the numbers, I would take the less expensive.

Yes that's true. cable is usually only one cable shared among many users so the more people that go online the more people you have to share the bandwidth with hence slower speeds at peak times.

It depends on the area that you live in. If you have a lot of cable internet subscribers, then nights will usually be slower because everyone is online. To me, cable usually yields higher speeds (downloading, page loading, etc.), but can fluctuate from area to area. DSL is pretty reliable, and will give you around the same speeds consistently. DSL is also better for gaming because you can get lower ping times. Hope this helps.

I live in a highly populated area, and a lot of people I know have cable and it is still faster than dsl for the same price.

Kintoke,

There are technical limitations and advantages/disadvantages between the two.

However, my best advice is to ask as many of your neighbours as possible. Asking the ISP what their speeds are like, is like asking a car salesman if the cars on his parking lot are any better than the cars in the dealership across the street.

This may be true for your area, but not all. My DSL provider has an OC3 running ATM and everyone connected to that circuit has a super-fast connection. The only downfall with ADSL is that it doesn't give you as much bandwidth going up. A 2-way cable connection allows equal bandwidth as long as your neighbors aren't hogging it. I've had exceptional downloads from my DSL connection. I have had up to 180k/s down and the average connection usually is around 10 megs/min. That's pretty quick considering most limitations are capped by the other side. I would evaluate the prices of not only the service, but whether or not they require a contract, offer equipment discounts on the modem, or any other promotions that may save you money. I think you'll be happy with whichever one you choose.

One more thing.....The sad truth to Cable/DSL connections is Morpheus and Gnutella agents are going to slow down everything since they are the primary source of slow connections these days. Just hope your ISP doesn't have to support too many users. If they don't have routers that can handle all of the NAT requests on their network, it will be slow until they either purchase more equipment or start blocking ports. I see a lot of price increases in the near future if something doesn't change with those programs...

LOL! Did you miss my reply?

Do you not have any neighbours on any type of highspeed connection? If so, ASK them how there connections fair and if they are friendly, do some tests.

I would choose DSL over cable because it is more stable. If you live in a nighborhood where all your neighbors dont use cable, then go with cable.

I'd say theres no right answer. It mainly dpeends on your area, not just regionally, but sometimes it comes down to which side of the street your on. i agree, ask your neighbors. As far as performance, I got 20 bucks in normal use no one will notice a difference between the two, barring outages. But yeah, ask your neighbors. Or if your stubborn and wont do that, go here

With current trends in broadband access, I'd focus more on the company providing the service than the service itself. I'd see what sort of restrictive rules they slap on your(bandwith limitiations, upload caps, blocking of certain ports for hosting, ect) as well as checking with current customers to see how good they are in resolving connectivity problems as well as billing errors.

The fastest internet connection in the world isn't worth squat if it's down frequently and takes a day or two to get back up an running. I'd focus on reliable service, both with the connection itself, as well as the human based customer relations.

The worst day on a cable hookup is generally better than the best day on a DSL connection. IMHO

Other than just speed, think about other services that the ISP offers such as number of mailboxes, newsgroups, static/dynamic IP, etc.

As for me, DSL and cable are both available in my area now. From what I have heard, cable in my area is faster than DSL, but I'm sticking with my DSL because of newsgroup access. @Home news servers (from what I have heard) are very crappy. I also like how my ISP (Verizon), lets me connect multiple computers to the DSL line through a regular hub without a router. Costs wise, cable is about $5 cheaper, but I have to buy a modem.

Holy crap! jack you must be way more loaded than the rest of us lowly peons stuck with 1.5 mb/sec! anyways my take on the situation, since the at home collapse, many of the former cable companies are struggling to make ends meat, bandwidth is expensive and they can't give it as freely now as they once could, in my area for example many people switched from dsl to cable and for a while they were getting tremendous speeds (750 kiloBYTES/sec) Now however they are capped accounts and are limited to 1.5 megs down and 128k up. Now with my dsl I am guaranteed that amount of bandwidth, but on cable the only thing they are guaranteed is that it will not exceed that speed. so you have to ask yourself if there are a lot of people in your neighborhood with cable, and you don't mind downloading all of your stuff at 2 in the morning, or would you rather take a "cut" in download speed (theoretical only for all practical purposes) and be guaranteed the bandwidth? My opinion (as it applies to my area) is to go with the dsl provided it isn't much more expensive.

There is no best. There are too many variables and factors. Have you just skipped everyones input because they did not say which one is best?

Do you not have any neighbours with any type of high speed connection? If you are not physically disabled, then I would recommend getting to know
your neighbours anyway. Keeps our communities strong and our crime down, as well as learning about how well the highspeed networks fair in your area.

What is DSL?

My cable is 5.5+ Mbps down/1Mbps up off peak and drops to a lowly 3.5M druing peak. nice seeing those speakeasy tests at 5000kbps+ and 500+KBps explorer downloads Not bad for $40/mo.
