DSL - Will any modem work?

My DSL modem from ATT appears to be on the blink (Speedstream 4100). I have the option of buying the ATT "approved" modem directly from them, or getting a modem/router combo from the standard networking manufacturers (Dlink, Linksys, etc.).

According to ATT, they cannot "guarantee" that non-approved modems will work on their DSL service, however, is that really the case? Isn't DSL just DSL, or are there proprietary factors that could prevent a modem/router combo from DLink and the like from working correctly?

Yes, pretty much any modern DSL (ADSL) modem will work with every provider. The ADSL spec is up to 8 mbit/s, ADSL2 up to 12 mbit/s, ADSL2+ up to 24 mbit/s.

You mainly need to know your username/password, and the method of authentication, PPPoA, PPPoE, or IP via DHCP. And also the VPI/VCI values.

DSL modem configuration can be slightly daunting on the first go around. Some are easier than others. Most DSL modems are also routers, and some are also wireless routers. If you are using wireless, you may want to get an all-in-one ADSL modem wireless router. You can also just get a modem and use it in bridge mode with the router of your choice.

I like some of the Netopia products, although configuration on these is not the easiest. I don't care for the 2wire products, but some people really like them.

DSL modems tend to be a great buy on eBay, you can save a lot.

Getting a Modem/Router Combo is a Bad idea. The Router part of these combo s*x big time, when it is time to upgrade a Router your lose the Modem as well.

Use whatever Modem you have and get a good standalone Router.

You will be very hard pressed to find an ADSL modem that is not also a router. But like I mentioned above, you can put the modem in bridge mode and use it with another router - provided that you can use PPPoE. If you must use PPPoA, you're pretty much forced to use the router functions of the modem.
