The phone companies won't provide DSL without also having an active phone account on the line. You can't have DSL without a phone line going with it. I tried to do the same thing and that's what I was told.

You should ask your cable company to check your connection. 200kbps is terrible. How are you measuring this speed? From a site like www.dslreports.com or by your downloading speed it shows when downloading a large file?

1Mbps down is actually not all that bad. 200kbps up is a very odd number too. The cable in my area is Comcast which is 3Mbps down and 256Kbps up. Most DSL is 128Kbps up.

My DSL is changing next month to 3 Mbps down and 800 kbps up, for about US$35 a month. I guess pricing here in Canada is better.

Use something like ABC (Another Bittorrent Client) and limit your total upload speed to something just below your max. upload speed, like 20kbps That should not kill your downloads

At home the most I get on DSL is 170K per sec d/l. So don't expect much more than 200. At school I get 1.1 mb a sec d/l so HAHA!

There's 2 problems with your post.

1) He's talking slow upload speeds, not download.

2) You're talking 170K, he's talking 200k (big K versus little k, there is a difference)

You must be talking about SDSL if the upload is so much better than your 200kbps cable. SDSL rocks for games. I have an advertised 512/512 DSL line but actual throughput is more like 640/640. Not the best for downloading but great pings.

From my experience, you do NOT need a number, they just tell you that so they can suck more money out of people. A few yrs ago I was on vacation for about 3 weeks. I didnt know they shut my phone service down till i got back, but I still had the DSL connection alive. Even after an extra week i still was on the DSL line. When i called to turn my phone back on.. i mentioned that the DSL was still functioning and all the person said was something to the effect of . " it shouldn't be working". A little different than " it can't work".

Comcast offers the 3 mbps down 256 k up, but it's the pro version and costs $100/month. Us mere mortals are stuck with 1.5 mbps down and 200 k up.

In CT this is the normal version now. There is no pro anymore.

American DSL is now 6 megabits down and 600 kbps up for $45, getting close to those sweet canadian prices.

Where do you live and what company offers that? In Atlanta, the best DSL I've seen for $45 is only 1.5m/256k.

Edit: Just saw the thread in OT. SBC doesn't service my state, YAY!

Same as cable, even there is cable line in your house, you don't subscribe cabletv and want to have cable broadband, you need to add the basic cabletv subscription fee.

no so kingofcomputer. I have cable interenet but no cable tv well i have cable tv just don't pay for it. they have to open the line up for the internet and let all the channles under 100 thru. so I have to pay 10 more a mounth to have cable interenet with out tv but 10 bucks for 50+ channels is fine with me

Exactly. That's how Comcast works as well but they put filters on to separate cable from cable internet. That's how it's supposed to work but in a lot of cases they never bother with the filters so you can end up with free cable tv (basic).

I know. I have used Charter Pipeline before.
It's $10 vs regular basic cabletv service $16.xx.
What I said before is no matter cable or dsl, you still have to some extra for non-subscriber.

My Earthlink cable(RoadRunner) increased its speed to 3mbits/sec from 2mbits/sec. The upload stayed the same at 384mbits/sec. I now download at a average of 360KiloBytes/sec. Definitely can't complain. Except for the bill . I pay $42.99/month.
